AMD XP CPU Why So Costly

Hi all, thought I might bring this up here, to see what other Folks think.
I am flabbergasted as to the prize of the top end XP CPU's like 3000+ or 3200+ I have been trying to lay my hand on one of them but under $100.- no go. And that is second hand
yet I can buy a brand new AMD AM2X2 6000 for 112.-
or a Intel Core2 Duo E 7200 for $ 147.- I would have thought that either of them would be far superior to a old used XP 300+ or 3200+.
Am I missing something here??

Availability would be the primary factor ..... kinda like gettin your hands on a General Lee.

Dave is right - its an availability thing or let's call it supply and demand. Depending upon the board its going on, the best of the best were the 2600+M and the 2800+M which were actually designed to run on a 266mHz Bus. However, they are unlocked processors that run all day long on a 400MHz Bus and will outperform either a 3000+ or 3200+. They can still be found, but as you have discovered - they are pricey. You'll also need a board that can take full advantage of their potential and this is an even tougher find.

Thanks to Sven, I was able to pick up a 3000+ Mobile about a year ago which was supposed to be the fastest of the 266MHz Mobiles, however, that particular processor didn't run as fast as a 2600+ Mobile or a 2800+ Mobile which I still have salted away. I did use it in a build about 4 months ago paired with an Abit NF7s version 2 and it is running quite nicely at 2400MHz. Stock speed on a 3200+ was 2200MHz.

What board are you trying to find a processor for?

 

Here's a new 2600 for $60
And a 3200 for $95

 

This appears to be a 2800 processor, mobo and heatsink/fan for $90

 

Nice finds there Dave ....... Hawk, you should jump on that 3200+ if thats what you need. Now, the 2600+ is a Barton and depending on the stepping, it may be an unlocked CPU capable of running every bit as fast as the 3200+. I didn't look closely at the 2800+.

The 2600+M or 2800+M will cost you upwards of $190 if you can find them.



edit: Just looked at the 2800+ listing again - also Barton (says it right in the title - duh!) could also be unlocked but no cpu pictured and no stepping or date of mfg listed. Tried to read the stepping of the 2600+ at 400% zoom and the photo just isn't good enough. Would still call all three very good deals.

 

Another used 3200+ here - $73.50

Rockster I knew that you did like the Mobile XP's.
The Board that I would use is the MSI 6570 K7N2G I am running a XP2000+ on it at the moment.
I did try out first on this board my old XP1800 Palamino and I think it was faster than the 2000 but I want to preserve that one.

 

I'm not familiar with that board in particular but its got the nForce2 chipset which certainly was the right pedigree for speed. Good Luck in your quest.
