This week, I built and installed a BOAC (Box Of Assembled Components) for a friends son.

It is based on Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe, AMD Athlon64 X2 5600+ and 2x1024 MB PC2-6400 Kingston ValueRam (matched pair, approved by Asus) in dual channel mode.

All the appropriate drivers have been installed from the Asus CD.

Cool 'n' Quiet is enabled in BIOS and in Windows XP, the power management is set to "Minimal Power Management" but when idling, it humms along at 2.8 GHz.

I have googled the problem and found nothing conclusive other than trying a BIOS update. I have tried to find release notes on the BIOS updates but drew a blank.

Anyone out there who has got an idea about what might be wrong?

(The BOAC has been delivered which means that all suggestions can not be tested immediately.)

No, I assumed that the AMD drivers supplied on the Asus CD are the correct ones. I have read the pages you linked to and all steps have been taken.

I went to my friends place today to install a graphics card that had been on backorder (is that an english word?). The processor was idling at 1.80 GHz and when being used the processor was running at 2.80 GHz. Cool 'n' Quiet was obviously working and the previous time, I was too impatient.
