    Hello,

I have the same problem that this guy:

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=53456&highlight=increases+drive+letter

It is: Every time i plug the usb pen drive a new letter is assigned to the device. Always increasing (g,h,i,j... and so on), but, in my case, disregarding the usb port i choose. Only rebooting the system and clearing the:
    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices" entries restarts the process.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance...

Hello mropz and welcome to the Board,

Do you have multiple usb devices? Are they plugged in while you're trying this one? If not, try that.

You should also eliminate the possibility that this particular device is not faulty. Do you have another system that you can try it on - installing it then plugging back in?

    Regards - Charles

    Hello charlesvar,

Thanks your answer. Rign now, I have only this pen drive (kingston), none other usb device. And, independent of what port i plug it in, the drive letter always change:( . Using or not the "safety remove" feature. Moreover, I could verify that it happens also with another device, it is, my foston mp4 player.
The pen drive is working correctly in others systems, I use the pen drive just to carry data from my home PC to my work PC. In my work PC the drive letter is always the same, in fact, it is always the next unused letter at the moment of connection, what is the standard behavior.
I just check that simply restarting the system is enouth to reset the drive letter counting. Then, it is not a severe problem, once i can stil using the usb pen drive. Anyway it is annoying. So i am trying to fix it.

I hope i will get the tip in this forum, that seems to be very good.;)

    Hi mropz,

Unplug all USB devices and in Device Manager remove the USB controllers and all the hubs and reboot. XP will re dedect the hardware and the drivers.

    Regards - Charles

In the good old DOS days a person could add a "lastdrive=x" command in their autoexec.bat file that would probably stop this...

    Here's a REAL LONG shot:

"FREE" Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

TweakUI has an option to hide drives in the control panel section. Might give it a try...

    mropz ...

Try this with the flashdrive plugged in:
Open Disk Management (Start > Run type diskmgmt.msc).

Right-click on the proper drive and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths... ".

    Click the Change button.

From the drop-down menu, select a letter (such as K, for Kingston) to be assigned to the drive, and OK your way out. The change should take place immediately.
I assigned the letter S to my SanDisk Cruzer Mini flashdrive, and it always uses that letter. HTH.
