One of our users is soon to have an operation on her left hand, rendering it usless for a few weeks. she is happy to type with her right hand only (something she does normally anyway), but she has asked me about disabling Ctrl+Alt+Del for logon.

I know I can disable it, or set up her keyboard with settings for people with disabilites. Disabling the requirement for Ctrl+Alt+Del has security implications and changing the keyboard settings will alter the position of some of the keys.

Is there anyway to programme one of the function keys to have the equivalent action to Ctrl+Alt+Del?

    Thanks

    Go to www.iolo.com

Download Macro Magic. Then write a macro for Ctrl-Alt-Del, and assign it to an F key.

You could put a shortcut to taskmgr.exe on desktop...

Surely Grunty is referring to the log on process of Windows NT/2000 where Ctrl/Alt/Delete must be pressed in order to acces the logon interface?!

Will macro magic work prior to logon?

Wow! Never heard of that. Sounds like a colossal pain.

"Will macro magic work prior to logon? "

Under the circumstances you describe, probably not, but worth a try. Macro Magic is a useful utility to have in any event.

Then he could make an icon shortcut to the log on function, rather than remapping the keyboard, as this is a temp solution anyway.

    ?!?!???

You do know you can use the other alt key for ctrl-alt-del logons?

Assumuing they have a normal keyboard it is more than possible to press ctrl-alt-del on the right hand using the Alt Gr key and the del above the arrow keys.

None the less to disable ctrl-alt-del do the following:

    Open the group policy editor:

    Goto:
Computer Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Security Settings --> Local Polices --> Security Options

Then edit the "Disable CRTL+ALT+DEL requirement for logon" Change it to Enabled, Hit OK and exit.

If you are in a domain you may have to edit this setting at domain level.

I do all three with my right hand anyway.
Most keyboards had a Alt and a Ctrl on the right side also.

Not familiar with Macro Magic but if a script from it can be run as a service, it can be set to kick off when the PC is powered on and loads the OS. So it would be there and available for any logon.

Thanks for all the advice. I will take the easiest route and tell her to use the left-handed ctrl+alt+del logon. I didnt realise Alt Gr could be used.

That macro magic looks very useful though, and I will look into that a bit further.

    Ta all

Can also do the regedit thing,
    System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    Value Name: DisableCAD
    Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
    Value Data: (0 = Require Ctrl+Alt+Delete, 1 = Disable)
