Yesterday I took a couple of snaps as usual with my Olympus Digital 6.0 mega pixel 2.5 LCD.

Used the usual cable to connect the camera via USB front port on my PC tower and the usual AutoPlay dialog box did not show up on my desktop for me to choose out of several items what I wanted to do. I right clicked on My Computer > open, but the D:\drive was empty. I usually choose to 'make a new folder on Picasa' > import and that is it.

So I then downloaded and installed Olympus Master CD that came with the camera, (Never needed before) but I thought I will try anything to correct this issue. Still the same, the D:\ Removable Drive is empty.

I then booted up my Laptop on the same Network, enabled the camera in the USB port, up popped the AutoPlay dialog box, I chose to make a new folder in Picasa, imported the pics, and using the sharing folder importing the pictures over to the PC. Certainly the long way around for me.

So to clarify the Laptop works well with importing the pics from the camera, but the PC will not which is the new issue.

Question: Can anyone pinpoint what the trouble is on the PC that it will not recognize the camera and its photos for importing. One interesting thing when disconnecting the camera from the PC I used the "Remove Hardware option" the camera showed up for hardware to remove, so in one way the PC is recognizing the camera and in another it is not.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated....thanks

The computer is running very well with no other problems, but I would like someone to tell me how I can clear out my USB ports, shy of using http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
It is a bit harsh I think.
Can you comment on USBDeview.exe please. For me when I delete the camera options after running it, I loose my mouse and have to do a hard reboot which I do not like doing....and nothing changes, AutoPlay still will not appear for me to choose my option to import my pics to Picasa3.

I do not have teatimer enabled in Spybot Search and Destroy either as one forum mentioned this maybe causing the problem.

Anyone with a helpful idea thanks.....:)

    Hello tallin,
    welcome to Windows BBS ... :) ... !

I have never used or even seen USBDeview and can not comment on it.

In my computer I have an add-on USB 2.0 card (the on-board is USB 1.1) with a hub installed in the front panel. From time to time, it doesn't recognize my USB memory stick. I have found out that disabling the power management (always on) on that specific port solves the problem.

Greetings Christer and thank you kindly for your reply.

I do not have an option to disable my Power Supply within this PC.
I have the following options for your information and guidance:
    • Home/Office Desk
    • Portable Laptop
    • Presentation
    • Always On (Current chosen option)
    • Minimal Power Management
    • Max Battery
Can you guide me to where I might find an option to disable the power supply following within my system specifications posted in my first post....thanks

I have one USB port at the front of the tower, and four at the back. On odd occasions at boot I do not get Mouse movement after the Windows Screen, but if I am quick I unplug the Mouse USB cable, then plug it in again during boot, mostly I get Mouse movement immediately. I have been wrestling with these nagging problems for months, only to-day I decided to do something about it. Your Forum Newsletter arrived so I thought I would give you folks a shot at solving my issue. So although not a disaster, a problem I would like to move on from if I could so your further assistance would be of great help to me.

I took a screen shot, but no options to attach it for you to view. Another query - I would like to include my Avatar, but again no option to include it in my profile. :(

    kind regards,

Right-click the "My computer" icon > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > expand "USB controllers" > right-click "USB root hub" > Properties > Power management > uncheck the box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power "

Contributing members have the option to attach files.

Thanks, I followed your step by step and found all "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" boxes were unchecked already.

@Arie I have tried AutoFix some time ago. It does not solve the issue but thanks for your post.

    kind regards,

    Download Autorun fix
    Double click on fix.bat
When done, restart computer, and see, if autorun works.
If not, reverse changes, by double clicking on backup.reg created in same location where you ran fix.bat from.

Thank you for your post. Before doing anything I ran MalwareBytes' and SuperAntispyware, both showing a clean system...and of course made a backup of my system.

I researched what Autorun Fix was, then downloaded and ran it.
On reboot I got a warning of a virus present. I chose to send it to the vault.

Running Autorun Fix did not fix my AutoPlay issue.

I am getting expaende.exe wanting to be placed in my Startup folder - I denied this as it is 'cloaked Malware'.

    Your comments would be appreciated.

    kind regards,

Autorun fix is a clean file, so whatever program gives you a warning it's false positive.

No, I did not abandon this thread, I needed to find out why AutoPlay would not work. Finally I did so am posting the result to assist others if the same happens to them.

Thank you for the assistance I did receive here, I am most appreciative of it.

    kind regards,

    last update to nagging problem

Well at last I can report back after taking my tower to my professional techie who spent one hour trying to hunt down my AutoPlay problem on site.

Firstly he gave me in quick succession an alternative for importing my photos from Camera to Picasa through Disk Management. Then he discovered my DVD(D)drive was faulty which could and I emphasise could be part of my problem. He could not however fix my AutoPlay option at this stage.

I agreed to replace the DVD-ROM/RW of course, so he took the tower with him to the workshop to do the work, along with a professional clean out. He also said he would have a further attempt to get AutoPlay to work, but in the end he said it was a registry issue and could not be fixed without a reload of OS which of course we both agreed was not necessary for such a small problem. I should mention AutoPlay works on all other drives except (X) being the USB removable drive.

That's it really, the tower is back, all is running well, and through Disk Management I can import the photos with no problems at all.

    kind regards,:)
