Thought I'd try and give as much info as I could, so sorry if its a bit long, not sure if I should post it here or if it should go in the hardware forum.

My is system comprises of Abit nf7-S V2 motherboard, Athlon XP 1700 processor, 512mg 2100 Crucial ddr memory, Hercules Radeon 9800 se 128mg Graphics card, Audigy 2 sound card,2x 160 gig Maxtor hard-drives. Win xp sp1. Sygate, and Linksys router.

Have removed the sound-card and am using the on-board soundstorm at the moment.

This is what I did before trying to install sp2.

Updated the bios, updated the motherboard and graphics card drivers.

Windows automatic updates are turned off as I prefer to download and keep any necessary updates, then install them when I have checked them out.

Went to windows update, let it check the computer, downloaded and installed all critical updates, strange thing here it said I needed to run Mydoom, Zindos, and Doomjuice Worm Removal Tool I knew that I was not infected, but downloaded it and ran it anyway and the system was clean. I did not get the GDI detection tool, didn't want that as I check all my other programs for updates regularly.

Updated the virus checker Etusts v6.1.70, updated spybot S & D v1.3.012, updated Adaware SE 1.05, SpywareBlaster v3.2, A squared 2 and scanned with them all. Ran CWShredder. Nothing found.

Ran Norton's windoctor, ran easycleaner cleared temp files, emptied recycle bin, etc. ran reg seeker. In fact cleaned everything I could.
Cleared the prefetch files. Defraged with Norton's speed disk. Ran pagedefrag, ran erunt and optimised registry, backed up the registry with erunt and did a system restore point.

Shut down, and did a drive image in dos. Rebooted then using startman, I turned off all the programs that I normally have running when windows boots, ie. Spywareguard, spybot, anti-virus, soundcard sygate in fact everything. Unplugged from the router. Rebooted and installed sp2 from a disk I ordered from Microsoft.

It installed ok, it created a restore point and backed up the previous version, said the pc needed to reboot, I got as far as the windows splash screen, just before the user came up it rebooted in a continuous loop. I went into safe mode, no restore points available all disappeared, had big problems trying to make it into safe mode again, eventually got there, and used erunt to go back to sp1. Deleted sp2 . Thought I'd give it another go, next day, the samething happened again, this time I used drive image to restore back to sp1 as for some reason even erunt wouldn't work. Left it for a week, had a look on google where it was suggested that you turn off automatically restart on a system failure, to get the error. Did this, then went the through the whole process again, updating and scanning, did a new drive image. Put on sp2 same as before, except this time I got a stop error, which is:

    Stop:
    0x0000008E(0xC0000005, 0xF8C4E51D, 0xF8B4D068, 0x00000000)
    nothing else.

Did a search on google, but couldn't find anything on the whole error, found just the 0x0000008E, (couldn't find anything on the other bits), which suggests that it could be a bad memory, I checked the memory with memtest and was all ok. Besides the PC works fine with sp1, and does some intensive video processing. I am quite happy doing without sp2, but its just bugging me not being able to install it and I would like to know how to correct the error.

If anyone has come across this before, please let me know, or if anyone has any other suggestions I would be grateful for some advise.

    Thanks

Aside from the other problems, doing this would lead to many more. ERUNT restores an older registry, but that does not uninstall SP2, so you ended up with an old registry that pointed to an SP1 configuration that was no longer there.

As you may know, 8E is a rather unspecified error that often means a failed memory module. Though this would have to be a great co-incidence in this case, you might try swapping out memory modules just to see if it makes any difference.

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315335

Did you have any virtual drives or SCSI devices installed? Any theming programs that used alternate ntoskrnl.exe's or altered the boot.ini file?

You could attempt to install SP2 after using msconfig to disable all startups execept services.

    Hi Abraxas,

Will try swapping the memory over the weekend.

Thanks for the info on erunt, as all the system restores had disappeared, I thought I'd give it a go, I did delete sp2, then I restored the drive image from dos.

I don't have any virtual drives or SCSI devices installed. Although my scanner is a SCSI, I recently changed motherboards and haven't got round to putting the SCSI card in yet.

I disabled all startups except services, using startman a startup manager.

Not sure what you mean by
    How can I check?

    Thanks again,

More grist for the mind here. It seems to point to a hardware problem which could be memory or some peripheral. Got everything disconnected? I think you said you did.

I'm sure Abraxas is referring to any changes you might have made to the splash screen, et al, that some folks like to do. That alters the ntoskernel.exe file and can cause goofy problems. You don't sound like that type. :)

Perhaps Abraxas will return with more info.

    Good luck.

    Hi surferdude2,

Thanks for the reply, will have a good look through the site you suggested tomorrow, its a bit late now for me to take it all in at the moment(I'm in the UK). Everything is disconnected except the printer.

Only things I've changed in windows was to stop some unnecessary services, using suggestions from the Black Viper site and GRC and stopped a few things with xp antispy. Moved some folders ie. temp, my docs, and documents and settings from the C drive to my data drive using xteq.
    That about it.

    Thanks again,

That's exactly what I was referring to: StyleXP, BootXP, or any other programs that replace ntoskrnl.exe (which contains the bitmap for the XP screen you see at boot). You would certainly know if you had installed one of these since you would have had to choose a boot screen.

    Bug Check 0x8E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
The KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED bug check has a value of 0x0000008E. This indicates that a kernel-mode program generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.

    Parameters
The following parameters are displayed on the blue screen.

    Parameter Description
1 The exception code that was not handled
2 The address at which the exception occurred
    3 The trap frame
    4 Reserved

In this case, the driver loaded in memory range 0xF8C4E51D threw and access violation. Without seeing more of the dump data, hard to give specific advice. If you could run the .dmp file through the dump data tool , should be pretty easy to see what driver that is. Thats an odd range of memory, so almost certainly a third party driver.

    Hi JoeHobart,

Thanks for the reply, followed your link to the page where it shows the Dump Data collection tool and instructions, I have downloaded the debugging tool from Microsoft but when I click on the debugwiz zip file at the bottom of the post, I get the following message:

Internet Explorer cannot download attachment.php?attachmentid=161 from www.windowsbbs.com.
Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

is there somewhere else I can get this file?

Also forgive me if I'm being a bit thick here, but can you please clarify how I go about this,at the moment I am using my laptop to correspond.

Do I restore my old C drive image onto my desktop PC and go back to sp1, from which I can install the programs you suggest, then reinstall sp2, get the stop error, go into safe mode to run the log or shall I leave the pc as it sp2 and go into safe mode, install the debugging tool from microsoft and run the log.
Sorry but have never come across this before.

    Thanks for your help

    Hi,

Thanks Aire for sending me the file,
today I tried to install sp2 once again, the same problem occurred with the same stop message, so I booted into safe mode to run the debugwiz, but I only seem to have an old dump file, changed the settings from small memory dump to full memory dump and increased the size virtual memory size, tried again, but no new dump files.

In C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson I have a dump file and a log file but the date of these files are very old and not todays date. Is there something I have to setup to get the files in safe mode?

Thanks for any help you can give,

    Hello JoeHobart,

Thanks for still being helpful in this, I have pasted the pstat info that I received whilst in safe mode in sp2, and have also posted the info from sp1 when this is running, ok, I didn't know if you needed both, but thought I'd do both just in case you did.

the data is accurate, however, the driver is not loaded.

OK, we are going to have to get the data out of a dump. As you said before, you werent creating dumps. My gut feeling is that its a pagefile thing. Make sure you have a page file 110% the size of your physical memory on your C: drive. You will need to set its size as such. Also make sure you have enough disk space for both the dump and the new pagefile.

    Hi Hello JoeHobart,

Thanks for replying, As I have 512mb ram and I had previously read that the pagefile to get a full dump should be 2x memory plus 1 on the C Drive, I had the pagefile set at 1025mb, when this didn't give me a dump I tried it set as let windows manage it, still no dump. I also have virtual memory allocated to another drive empty partition on the drive, I will remove this and set the virtual memory to 563mb and try again, could it be something that I have previously changed could cause this? If I delete the old dump file will windows reproduce a new one?

Thanks again for your time and help
