Immediately following boot up of my Win XP machine (with 1Gb RAM) I have noticed recently that I cannot start any programmes for about 45 seconds. I click the desktop icon and nothing appears to happen. However the computer remembers my clicks and eventually following a refresh of the screen icons continues to load the requested programme and from that point on functions normally.

The above fault I can live with but I think it is causing a problem with the start-up of my Address book programme as it brings up an annoying window saying it cannot find it’s database server. The details of this I shall spare you.

Why is my computer so slow to allow access to my programmes? Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards etc………

Sounds like there is another process/program running at startup which is hogging the CPU - could be your AV doing a scan or a driver conflict?

Another possibility is that the m/c is searching for a network. If you have no network, but do have a NIC card or onboard NIC try disabling it in Device Manager.

To determine what is loading at start up download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel

Part of this is known sheninagans with xp and greater operating systems. People complained that it took too long to logon, so the guys in redmond spun up a process called USERINIT.EXE that does a lot of work after you get your start button.
There is also a whole host of stuff you probably have installed, MSN, ICQ, Virus Scanners, WebRadio, WeatherTracker, and spyware galore. All of those things initialize after you logon, and frequently will perform blocking operations (read: delaying clicks).
I'd recommend you check out all the stuff you have running to see if you really need all the different applications starting on logon. Most things will let you turn off thier tray component, and this will help mitigate the speed problem. My p4 1.4 machine will go from poweron to 'click responsive' in about 20 seconds. Logon to click responsive in the sub30 second range is reasonable for a normal amount of startup applications.
