    Hi,
Lately every time I boot up my computer I get a message saying that Adobe update Manager has an update to load.....

The peculiar part is the message acknowledges that the file already exists and I am being prompted to replace the existing updated file with the same updated file.........only today.

I have said Ok a few times, thinking that this would solve the problem, but this program is stuck on stupid and continually returns every time I boot up..

I did go into the Registry and delete the Adobe Update Manager but this did not change anything the message still appears every time I boot up..

Does anyone know where this prompt lives and how I can get rid of it.....???  :(

Download Hijackthis and unzip it to a 'normal' folder (so not the desktop and not a temp folder). Run a scan & log then post the log here. There should be a registry entry listed and if so, you can use another HJT scan and delete it. Unless you are sure when you see the log, post it here and we can tell you exactly which line to check for removal.

Adobe update Manager for which exact adobe program? Most all adobe apps have a setting available in options where you can set updates to "manual" and get rid of adobe auto updates completely.

    Hi Blakston,

One of the Adobe programmes on your machine has put an item in your start-up folder, not the registry. I cured this problem by using StartUp.cpl, but any one of the free start up monitoring programmes will do it. I recommend StartUp Control Panel available here

r.leale....Thank you for the link...I went there and downloaded the exe and then tried to open it from the installed folder and nothing happened.....did it twice and still np go....Don't know why ...just doesn't seem to work...

For clarification Here is exactly what the window looks like every time I boot up............
    ........................................................................................................

    .............................Adobe Reader Update Manager................................

A file with the same name already exists in the location.
Click replace to overwrite the existing file(s) or click Change Destination to specify a different download destination.

    ........Replace....... .............Change Destination...........

    ........................................................................................................

Welshjim....exactly where am I looking to see if the mshss.exe is????

    Also,
I looked everywhere for my adobe reader file but all I could find were Adobe Reader shortcuts....even in my startup Program list....
I would like to go into its settings and change the correct items but It seems to be hidden....Looked in My Documents but wasn't there either  :(

    Hi again,

The .exe for Start up Control Panel puts an icon in the Windows control panel, so it's Start>Control Panel>Startup to run it, and the Adobe items should appear in the 'Startup (User)' tab, where it can be disabled.

blakston6286--Did you open Adobe Reader to see if you can disable the auto updater from Edit|Preferences|Updates in the Adobe Reader window? If you cannot find a shortcut to Adobe Reader in Start|All Programs, do a Start|Search for AcroRd32.exe. When you find it, click on it and Reader should open. (The page will be blank, but Edit|Preferences on the toolbar should work.)

How do you find mshss.exe on your PC? The same way you found AcroRd32.exe--click Start|Search.
I hope you will find that disabling the auto updater will solve the problem. But if you find mshss.exe, follow the suggestions here
