When using Firefox, click on a link to download pdf files, takes a long time to load

Tried this with IE for a test,no problems

If I download files to desktop,no problems

The issue seems to point to FF

I don't have any problem. What version Adobe Reader do you have?

Will have to pass on this. I don't have firefox1.5. I am using 1.0.7. The reader version, I think is the same.

    Tom,

I use neither Fx 1.5 or Adobe 7, but see if these suggestions solve your issue.

    tomron,

My suggestion is to download the PDF to your disk and open the PDF there, instead of embedded with a browser window.

I noticed that Adobe was one program (about the only one IIRC) that Mozilla was constantly having problems with, and as soon as I downloaded the Foxit PDF reader, it stopped immediately. FF would freeze and I'd have to shut down and open it up again. Google for it--its very lightweight and for opening up and reading files only, it does an excellent job.

It may also depend on the type of file. I have had one experience today which convinced that it was the type of file (I never had a problem before).
I could get my 1099R from one location, on line. It was a two page document. and I did it for the first time without noticing what was going on. All I wanted was to print front and back. The document displaying quickly but the communication with the printer was so slow that I ended up with nine pages, instead of a single one. After I understood what was going on, I decided to have breakfast, while the printer, finally, decided to print. It took nearly four minutes to print two pages (front and back on one sheet). Then, I changed to printing in the Reader, since the site did not give me the opportunity to download the file. It took me about 3'50" that way. Now, this paper saving atte,pt took 14 pages, total.

I always found Acrobat Reader to be quite slow and cumbersome, but about a year ago I also learned about Foxit Reader, and it has been my default PDF reader since. It doesn't require installation, and it is f-a-s-t!

Version 1.3, released earlier this month, not only allows you to read and print PDF documents, but is supposed to allow you to type in them, as well (I haven't tried it). Version 2.0 beta is also supposed to be released this month.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah every once in a while I get an editable .pdf file. That's nice to know that I can edit them in Foxit as well. Man I've always appreciated Adobe--don't get me wrong. they were nice and nag-free back in the day when other programs were spraying icons and shortcuts and nags to upgrade all over the place. They pretty much defined user-friendly freeware, at least in my eyes. But if it won't work with Firefox, well, then, there's really no choice--Adobe has gotta go.

Typing into, and printing with, Foxit Reader 1.3

    Paul ...

This is somewhat off the original subject of this thread but, since we've suggested using Foxit Reader instead of Adobe's Acrobat Reader, a few words about typing text into a PDF document viewed with version 1.3 might be useful to others wishing to try it. It seems to me that it's mostly useful for filling in forms.

Initially, I couldn't figure out how to type into a PDF document, but then discovered "Typewriter" in the Tools menu ( "Typewriter" can also be accessed from the "pencil and paper" icon immediately to the left of the "?" icon). Once I discovered how to introduce text, I was unable to do it without repeatedly crashing the program. Rebooting my computer solved that problem.

The next problem arose when I printed a document into which I had typed ... the document printed, but without my added text! Not one to give up easily, I posted a message on Foxit's forum about the situation, and received a quick reply. It seems that, after adding text but before printing, it's necessary to click on the "Hand" (Hand Tool) icon ... not a design feature, but a work-around. The frustrating thing is that there is no guide to what the various icons are for. Fortunately, most (but not all) are intuitive.

Because Foxit Reader is a free program, it's not possible to save the text added a document. To do that, one has to upgrade to Foxit Reader Pro, at a cost of $39.

    HTH.

    Jim - Paul

Have used the print feature a number of times in FoxIt, a handy feature.
With a minimal practice, one can "fill in" the PDF form to provide an attractive finished document. If you want to "Save" your new document some of you may be able to do this. When you bring up FoxIt's "Print Screen ", at the very top note NAME: ___________, which will have your default printer assigned. Click on the down arrow and see what choices you have. For myself I have FinePrint (I use the free trial version - prints a small banner on page edge), a handy print management tool. When I choose this as my printer, the document is first printed to my screen, then I choose "SAVE" and the PDF report is Saved including all of the extra print text I have inserted into the PDF. I can click on this saved document, it loads into FinePrint for "reprinting" at any time. Possible those who have PDF print drivers installed (they present themselves as a installed printer) have an option to
"write to file" or Save features.
