Kids new HP (XP Home) required current Flash Player version 9.0.28.0 to keep MSN Messenger 7.5 happy. Went to install, but IE 7 went through the install motions, but test page continued to give old version (8.xxx?). Then I downloaded current (Dec-2006) Flash Player uninstall exe and ran it. Downloaded Flash Player StandAlone install for IE and received 1402 error for registry entry ........
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Macromedia\Flashplayer. (see included JPG). Error refers to a access / permissions issue. Going into registry, XP will not open Macromedia/FlashPlayer entry ... "Error while opening key ".
Following suggestions via Google, I changed permissions at parent level (Macromedia), but will not write it to child FlashPlayer. So assuming key was corrupted, I tried to delete, will not allow. I then uninstalled ALL remaining Adobe products ... PDF Reader, Shockwave and ran numerous Regseeker searches against "Adobe, FlashPlayer, and Shockwave" and removed all found. But the above stated key/path continue to reside in registry and I continue to receive the same error when running local installs for IE and Mozilla FlashPlayer versions. ANY suggesting would be welcome.

Does this mean you signed on as Admin of the XP Home machine?

I'm really not familiar with XP HE so maybe I should keep my trap shut.

Correct, was signed in on Admin account. Once I can get XP to open the key, will change it "Everyone" status... allowing it to be updated by kids acct pr admin. But first have to be able to open the key in the registry.

I found this which has to do with Win me and 98se. Maybe it would work on XP Home?

Google search for error 1402 might yield some results you could use.
