Hi, I've just downloaded Acrobat reader 6.0 but whenever I open it It says that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. When I downloaded a pdf file, I now get a message saying windows cannot open this file so if I browse to locate a program to open it, it doesn't give me the option to use the acrobat reader only photoshop elements. Lorna.

lorna--Just a thought. What version of Windows do you run? I do not believe Reader version 6 should be installed on Win98 machines, for example. Go back to to the Adobe site and read the instructions carefully at each step as you go though the download process. They will lead you to right version of Reader for your PC. If, indeed, you have installed the wrong version or Reader, uninstall it first before installing the new version.
However if that is not the problem:
I do not run Photoshop, so do not know if it can even handle PDF. However, you might first look through the Options in Photoshop. If it possible to do so, you may have set it up as the default application for PDF. If that is what you find, uncheck the box.
And if that is not the problem or you cannot find anything like Options for Photoshop, click Start|Settings|Folder Options|File Types tab and scroll to Adobe Reader Document. (If you do not find that listing, just ignore the rest of this paragraph.) Highlight it and click Edit and then Edit again. What is written in the "Application used to open this file" line? If the last part is something other than AcroRd32.exe, then PDF files are associated with some program other than Acrobat Reader. Post back and we can tell you how to change that.

FYI - From the Adobe Website - System requirements for Acrobat Reader 6 :

    "Intel® Pentium® processor

Microsoft® Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT® 4.0 with Service Pack 6, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional or Home Edition, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

    32MB of RAM (64MB recommended)

    60MB of available hard-disk space

    Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, 6.0, or 6.1 "

    Lorna

If you are running one of the above OS's and your system meets the other requirements then I suggest you uninstall Reader and re-install it.

Incidentally I found that Reader 5 loaded much more quickly and was more than adequate for reading pdf's.

Photoshop will open pdf files - you will not get the option to use Reader if it is not installed correctly.

PeteC--Thanks for doing the research. I run Win98FE and had problems even with Reader 5.1 . I am using Reader 5.0 now.
I still think Lorna should check the 'Open action" association of Acrobat Reader Documents on the File Types tab.

Hi Jim and Pete C, thanks for all your help. I tried everything Jim suggested but still no joy, so I have just re-installed the reader again and everything now seems fine. Cheers both! Lorna.
