    Hi all,

Has anyone upgraded to the newer Adobe 8.1 reader yet?

I tried to do the upgrade, but the download manager did not seem to work...Or it froze up or something.

I finally had to do a system restore to clear the mess up. (running XP Home w/SP2, IE6)

Is this newer version of the Reader any faster than the previous app?

    Thanks.

I too tried to update my program after receiving the message of 8.1. My browser page would only load so far and then do nothing. No freezes or any problems, just wouldn't complete the loading of the page. I figured I'd just give it a couple days and try later.

Updated to 8.1 a couple of days ago with no issues. No idea what the changes are, but it works fine, although I only use it very occasionally and can't comment on speed.

Maybe the Adobe server was having a bad hair day :) Have you tried again?

Unlikely! Adobe Reader has been getting more & more bloated. The last "efficient fast" Reader was version 5x. After that, it began to be filled w/ bloat & mostly useless additional "features ".

    Evidently.

I'll give it another try later on.

    Thanks for the comments.

Foxit Reader loads a lot faster and also takes up less room on your hard drive.

    AdobeUpdater.exe uses 50% CPU

My PCs at home and at work were taking up to 10 minutes to do a normal shutdown. So I turned on the Task Manager before I shutdown and found that AdobeUpdater was running at a constant 50% CPU.

If you are running any version of Adobe 8.n it has auto update turned on by default. So when you open a .pdf document the AdobeUpdater starts and never finishes. It will use 50% of you CPU until the next boot.

There is a fix on the Adobe web site that worked on my work PC but I couldn't make it work on my home PC.

I came up with a fix of my own -- rename AdobeUpdater.exe to AdobeUpdater.exe.bad in this folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5

Adobe Reader does not complain that it can't find the updater program.

If you do not wish to use my fix then I suggest that you use Control Panel Add/Remove programs to remove Adobe Reader and go to the Adobe website and install a version previous to 8.0

I installed the Foxit reader, but it is not my default reader as of yet.

Thinking about uninstalling Adobe reader altogether and just use Foxit from now on...I don't really need the two .pdf readers anyway do I?
