I recently reinstalled WIN XP PRO on my computer which crashed. I'm trying to use the Ms Backup, which looks quite satisfactory for my needs, but when I try to schedule weekly backups, it requires that I be the administrator. When I highlight ntbackup in explorer, right click it and click "run as" it gives me the option to run it as administrator. which is the name in the name box and the password box is empty. I never chose any Windows password and wonder how to proceed so I can set up the backup program?
Anyone know what to do or how to get the backup program to run on a weekly basis.
    Thanks.

We can't help with lost or forgotten passwords, but if you have never set one have you tried simply leaving the password box empty?

BTW you should always set a password for the administrator account.

I never set a PW and have nothing to recover. I will have to set a PW for the administrator account. Thanks.

Did leaving the password box empty work?

In which case we can't help. Obviously a password has been set on the system. Sorry.

EDIT: Check your documentation, occasionally manufacturers or retailers will set default passwords.

??? MSBackup is asking you to set a password when you try to run as administrator ???

Actually I'm totally confused about any software asking you to set an administrator's password at any time.

This is the story. Highlight MS Backup and depress shift and right click. You need admnistrators rights to run it.
It asks you to set a password. I'm going to do it right now.

Your call, but I'd be concerned. It's been a while since I used MS Backup but I don't believe it would ever ask you to set an administrator password...

I'll step back and let others who are more familiar with the software comment though.

(seriously if what you are saying is true this is a major breach of security)

In our private letter, I mentioned that I had to go to control Panel ->User Accounts and set my PW there as administrator. After I did that I had to use that new PW to access MS Backup. Everything worked and I'm all set.
    Thanks for your help.!

    No problem ackerberg :)

Hopefully things are sorted now, I'll reply to your PM shortly (for others the PM's have nothing to do with this thread)

As far as I know this is a fact. You'll need a password protected account.

I had little doubt about that Arie, my concern was that MS Backup was prompting for ackerberg to set a password there and then, as it turns out this wasn't the case.

The breach in security would be advertising to any user, "here we don't have a password for Admin do you want to set one? ", I'm sure you understand the implications of that. ;)
