Here is how you get into the administrator account in XP without being in safe mode, or using the admin account on the welcome screen:
    hit control-alt-delete twice.

Never assume I know anything. Some of you have forgotten more than I know. Anyway, I'm delighted to know this tidbit, and thought I'd share it.

    Cheers from Ohio!

    Hi Johanna!

Are you referring to XP Home or Pro? Cause if it's Home, and it works for you, I want to know how it works for you. I have been trying for quite some time to log on as admin. without being in safe mode and haven't yet. Did you forget this thread ?

BTW, I too have been following your thread on Dad's upgrade, and I must say, "I think Dad shouldv'e jumped right on that!" Some good shoppin goin on there Lady!! :D

I made it work on Pro with the tap twice method . Before I ran into that trick, I used M$ Powertoys TweakUI to add the Admin to the Welcome Screen because I was playing with the Admin account. Next time I go to work, I'll see if I can get it to do that on XP Home.

I wish I could build that dream system for ME right now. Hope he's happy with his new Dell. >snicker<

I wish I could afford to have you build it for ME! ( He might be at first, but it won't last)

The old style logon screen comes up in home but access is 'denied due to an account restriction' no matter what or how I configure things. I sure hope someone figures out a work around to this..........soon! I've been driving myself nuts trying different things lately!

I was too trigger happy and have found out by myself!

I never log out but if I do and do as You say I get the login dialog box.

Now, where did I hide my password?

    Dave,
Download Tweak UI and under logon, there is an option to put the admin account on the welcome screen. This is what I did for my experiments last week. I'll play with the XP Home at work this weekend and see if I can get the admin account to pop up like I can here at home.

    Christer,
Here is my low tech password recovery solution:
They are all written on an index card taped to the bottom of my keyboard. Nah, physical access to my comp is not an issue- I live with three Rottweilers who think that my office is their den. I always ask the home security telemarketers if their systems will keep my feet warm at night?

    To all:
Data recovery is possible, by printing or burning, from the admin account. That was the reason for my original experimentation, and I want to thank everyone who helped me find the answers to my questions.

    Johanna,

My feet are kept warm from running around looking for hidden passwords ...... ......

I took the advice to create a password consisting of seven or fourteen units, containing not only letters and digits but also symbols to make it hard to crack. Since then I´ve tried to figure out who in the whole world would try to hack into MY computer ...... ......
