I posted this question a couple of hours ago, but can't find any sign of it now, so maybe I forgot to ultimately hit "submit new thread" or something - if it ends up being a double-post, I apologize...
I received one of those preposterous "Bill Gates will pay you 5 cents for every person you forward this message to" emails from a friend of mine, and in a fit of annoyance, I clicked on "Reply All" and sent everyone the link to Snopes.com's page debunking the myth. I was thinking that my friend might be embarrassed enough to at least think twice before doing mass-mailings like that again.
Well, I may have gotten some satisfaction by doing that, but karma came back and exacted retribution upon me by leaving me with 66 new addresses in my Thunderbird address book (all the recipients of my friend's original email!). This has happened to me a few times before, though never quite to this extent. It's getting mighty old having to go through my address book and delete all these unwanted additions manually, but I can't for the life of me find a command that tells my address book NOT to save the email addresses of everyone I send an email to!
IS there such a command available, and if so, where do I find it?!
    Thanks!

I just had the same deal with that email from someone I did business with at ebay. After receiving the email I got three more from others on his mailing list. I lambasted everyone and sent the same link debunking it.

For TB try Tools > Options > Addresssing tab. Clear the checkbox next to Automatically add email addresses to my: {Address Book Name} if you do not want Thunderbird to collect outgoing addresses.

Not to be picky, but you left out a step. The checkbox is found on the Tools > Options > Composition > Addressing tab. :)

    Many thanks to you both!!
I thought I'd checked everywhere under Tools > Options > Composing, but I obviously missed the tabs in the "background" there!

I don't use TB but can you create a message rule like I do with OE that automatically replies with a stern warning if Fw: is in the subject line? I have trained many people that have a bad habit of forwarding unwanted hoax mail not to do it anymore.

Rules are known as filters, and I don't see anything which would allow to send a message.
In my experience, very few people send hoaxes or anything like this. If I know them, I tell them, gently, to do searches before forwarding anything. I never got anything like that again.
If anything undesired messages deserve a filter which will send it to Trash. Multiple forwards are treated as Spam.

The people I deal with that send forwarded hoax mail are quite thick in the head and need a much more hard line approach. It seems the majority are in the 45-70 year old range. Usually someone younger learns after being reproached once or twice but the older ones are stubborn. Another common link is that they truly believe they will receive great luck or amass huge fortunes by forwarding these emails. If they weren't friends I would block them. I did this to my 70+ year old aunt and she has never forgiven me. Most of us in the family refer to her as the spam queen.

some people use the forward button like I use the Delete or Junk button.
They don't think. and some are not educatable.
Others do understand. A very nice lady used to send me hoax e-mails, and political stuff that I did not care for. I found out that general replies have never worked. They may feel good for me, but are often resented.
My wife does not reply to the multiple good luck forwards. I have edited, with her approval, some of these messages, and sent them back, saying that this is the way she wants them.
    But, i understand your point.

I am nearly 74, by the way.
