My address book (Netscape 4.78) has disappeared partially and continually crashes Netscape. When I use any method to access the address book it opens but with only about half of the old names and only fills about half of my monitor screen. When I try to maximize it, it crashes. If I try to add any of the missing names on new cards it won't accept them.

It started when I tried to print out the address book. I exported to another file and it printed out great. That is when the fun began.

I don't mind typing all of the names again if that is the only way to get it working again without crashing. I just don't want the darn thing crashing every time I open it up.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I just re-loaded 4.78 recently in an attempt to correct some other problems. But the address book problem occurred several days after the reload, so I don't think that it is related.

Hi brt, and welcome to the Forum!

See if either of these solutions work for you:

Open the Address Book, then FILE|EXPORT as an .LDIF file.
    Close Communicator

Rename the address book file from PAB.na2 to PABna2.bak, then restart Communicator

Open the new, pristine address book, then FILE|IMPORT the .LDIF that was saved.

The LDIF can also be read in Notepad or any text editor, where obvious corruption can be edited out.

OR if the above solution doesn't work...

Create a new profile to resolve the problem. To do so:

First: Back up your Users Folder!

    Close Communicator

Delete the nsreg.dat file, located in C:\Windows
    Start Communicator

Create a new profile for yourself, and give the new profile a unique name, so that it doesn't overwrite your old profile.
Use all of the information from your old profile, i.e. Mail server settings, etc.
Now check to make sure that the new profile is working. If it is you can shut down Communicator

Now open Windows Explorer, go to your User directory: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\ and then the old
profile name, and copy the Mail folder, the News folder, the bookmark.htm file, and the pab.na2 file into the new profile directory. When Windows asks if you want to overwrite the files, answer YES.

In a week or so, after you are certain that everything is working, go back to the User Profile Manager and delete your old profile.

Let us know if this helps, or if you have more questions.
