I keep moving the address bar in IE to the top toolbar where I want it and it keeps moving back under the toolbars when I restart. I also delete LINKS and HP View from the toolbar options and they return as well. It does not matter if I lock the toolbars or not. The changes I have made in the icons do stay put on restart.

I have tried holding the control key down while I close the window, but it seems to have no effect.

Can anyone tell me how to make my changes stay put?

    Thanks

    Daniel

P.S. I posted this over in the WinXP forum, but I suppose it should have been here.

With Sincere Apologies for being NO Help to Dan, at all...

One of the great mysteries of IE is why that "links" folder in Favorites arbitrarily pops up now and then. I can't figure out what specifically triggers it, and would love to know, if someone else has the answer. It will be gone for weeks, months, then-poof- suddenly, there it is again! What is supposed to be in there, anyway? Mine is always empty. Sometimes, after an install for someone else , or on OEM machines, there is stuff in there, but on my comp, there is never anything there. Nothing. Just a blank folder with a meaningless name.

Does IE assume I can't name my folders? After all, the favorites are links, right? Every doggone one of them. So why do I need a folder called "links "? It could be called "urls ", "bookmarks" "sites ", and be just as redundant. Links-Schminks! My folders have more descriptive names. Duh. What good is having Links handy if you can't find them?

    Johanna
(who forgot, until this post, that the Links folder gets on her nerves!)

You might have to lock your toolbars after making the adjustments. Right click anywhere on the toolbar and select 'Lock the Toolbars'.

    Hope it helps.

Thanks Lee, for trying to help me, but I have tried leaving the toolbars locked or unlocked and it makes no difference.

Actually, they're the easiest of all to get at if you use the links toolbar. If you go to view>toolbars>links and check links you'll have another toolbar in IE. Anything you put in the links folder will be on this toolbar. If you have folders in it, they will cascade when you click on them in the toolbar. If you have the links toolbar visible, you can add any shortcut to it by just dragging the IE icon in the address bar to either a blank spot on the toolbar or to one of the folders you have on the toolbar. You can put shortcuts to pretty much anything you want in there. I use it for the sites I visit most frequently. Also, it serves as a handy place to put shortcuts to any programs you use frequently while running IE. For example, I use Getright for a download manager but don't want it to be running all the time. I put a shortcut in the links folder to it and when I want to use it, it's just a matter of clicking on the shortcut to it in the links toolbar. Honestly, I'd be lost without my links toolbar. ;)

I've run into this with IE too. On mine, the google toolbar wouldn't stay where I put it. I wanted it at the bottom, but it always wanted to go to attach itself to the same row the links toolbar was on. I finally tried dragging it to the very top with the menus and for some reason it will stay there. It's only place it will stick. I've occasionally had luck getting things to stick for other people by rearranging some of the others too. It seems to be hit and miss. I suspect it's a bug of some sort.

Very strange. I have just tried it, readjusted my toolbar, locked it, closed IE, reopened it, logged off, logged on, opened IE again. No change.
Have a look at my screenshot. Is this what you mean by moving address bar?

    Zander,
I have tried the Links toolbar, but somehow, I'm missing the point. All of my folders are on the left of the screen because I leave the favorites window open. Two clicks, and I can add anything. Ain't it great how many choices we have? But I still don't know why that Links folder shows up spontaneously???

I am trying to get my address bar to stay in the top toolbar as your screenshot shows, but it returns to the third position down when I restart my computer. Also, I uncheck the links option and it is back when I restart my computer.

These changes do not go back on restart of IE.

    Thanks

    Daniel

Johanna --Are you saying that you have unchecked Links in View|Toolbars (so the Links on Toolbar disappear) and "something" rechecks it and Links then display again?

    I have found the problem.

It was the startup item "autotkit" which was installed by HP.

    I found it HERE .

I hope this will keep someone else from searching as long as I did.

Exactly. It reappears randomly, I get rid of it- may not see it for weeks or months, then it is back. I don't use it, don't know why it keeps coming back- and always empty.

One of those XP quirks I may never get to the bottom of, I suppose.

I can think of a couple of possibilities as to why the links folder returns. If you ever do a repair installation of windows I suspect it would get put back. Also, repairing IE or installing the IE service pack would do the same. It might be that some of the updates for IE (from windows update) would replace it too, though I'm not sure about this one. Any chance any of these things could be where you got it back from?

As for the links toolbar, I rarely use the favorites in the explorer bar. I don't like to give up the screen space. Using the links toolbar those that I want the most often are right there in the toolbar. If I want one of those that's not there, it's just a couple clicks to get at them anyway. What can I say? Different strokes for different folks I guess. But then,,, there are some people who prefer luna blue too. ;)

Nope, haven't done any of those things you mentioned, Zander, to get links back. Links just randomly reappears. But, it's not anything that bothers me...unlike looking at stark, cold Classic!:D :D :D

I use the luna scheme myself. I just prefer the silver over the blue. I know you've taken a bunch of kidding about about the blue though and thought this was a good time to for me to get my elbow jab in there too. :D

Also, hope things are a bit better for you with the wrist. I know it's easy for me to say, but this too will come to an end for you. I know, I've been there myself. ;)

Remove the Links Folder in Favorites Menu

Open the Registry Editor navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
and modify the string value LinksFolderName so that its value is blank. Now delete the Links folder from your Favorites and log out or restart your computer.

Zander, Thanks for the encouragement. I don't mind the ribbing, just don't expect me to shake hands any time soon! :D

Leeleelee, I will give the registry a shot- and will report back when (if?) it does it again! LOL! Thanks for posting.
