Anyone have a suggestion why attaching any kind of file just locks up TB?
Problem was not solved by reinstalling using a mozback restore, a fresh install or even an upgrade to 1.05.02. It just locks up TB and task manager simply reports application is not running.
PC is running XP Pro SP 2.Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Scott ...

I've never had problems attaching files of any sort to Tbird, so can't duplicate your problem. A couple of thoughts, though ... if this began happening recently, have you installed any new programs or edited your registry? If so, you might try a system restoration to a time before the problem with Tbird began.

If you're using any themes or extensions, try starting Tbird in Safe Mode (not Windows Safe Mode) and see if you still have the problem. (If you no longer have the Safe Mode icon, Start > Run, type <path to> thunderbird.exe -safe-mode.) If, after starting in Safe Mode, Tbird handles attachments as it should, a theme or extension is at fault. FWIW, I use the default theme, but am using ten extensions with no problem.

    JSS3rd,
Thanks for your response and suggestions.
I haven't installed any new programs, however I did do a registry clean, but it worked okay for a couple weeks afterwards.
I tried the safe mode - no difference.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Tbird, then uninstalled and upgraded to 1.05.02.
The PC in question is running XP and has been for a year or two.
Another desktop PC and a laptop are running W2K and don't have a problem with either Tbird or Firefox.
Does Mozilla have a known problem with XP?

By chance have you configured your AV to check outgoing mail? If so would it be trying to block the attachments?

Uninstalling and reinstalling will do nothing, as the problem is in the Profile. Did you do a "clean" install, or did you autoupdate?

Here are some things to try before you do anything as drastic as a system restore:

    Keep It Working (Thunderbird)

Delete the XUL.mfl file located in the XXXXXXXX.profilename file. It will be rebuilt when Thunderbird is restarted. This file grows to enormous size if not deleted frequently.

Are the attachments large, and by that I mean could the size exceed the ISP limitation for attachments? I did note that you stated "any" file locks up the application.

There should be no problem running Thunderbird with XP SP2...

    Hi Scott,

I've been running XP Pro (now with SP2) for more than four years on both my desktop and my laptop, and have been using Thunderbird (as well as Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox) for nearly three, and never have experienced the problem you're having with email attachments.

I know of no particular issues with the Mozilla programs and XP, and suspect that your problem stems from your Registry cleaning. You didn't say what program you used, but many such programs backup the Registry before doing their thing. If your Registry cleaner does that, it's possible that you may have the backup in the program folder, and can restore the Registry to its previous state. If Tbird then handles attachments properly, perhaps you can clean the Registry a bit more selectively.
