I posted this on the Thunderbird forum at Mozilla, but didn't get a response, so I'll try here.

Any time I try to add an attachment to a composition window, TB closes. As a result I have to put everything inline, if possible.

In an attempt to rectify the problem I've uninstalled TB and done a clean install. I've uninstalled the few extensions I use and disabled all plug-ins but the situation remains unchanged, even using TB Safe Mode.

    Any thoughts?

How long has this been going on? Did it just start after an updating of some kind, or has it always done that?

Truthfully, I have no idea when it started, but it hasn't always been that way. Normally, the only things I send with messages are photos, and I usually send them inline.

It was only when I tried to attach a document about three weeks ago that I first became aware of the problem. I was able to get around it by copying the document and pasting it into the message I was writing, but that's not a satisfactory solution if a document is somewhat lengthy, or if I want to send a number of photos.

I'm baffled, because I've done everything I can think of to solve the problem.

I was hoping someone who has more knowledge about this sort of thing than I do would chime in.

If at an earlier time you could add attachments but now you can't, even after a clean install of TB, I would think that means something has changed with TB itself. Can you get an earlier version of TB and see if that works? The other possibility is that you've added or updated another program, or a configuration setting in one or more, that is causing the problem. It would have to be one of those.

So there's the needle in the haystack for you to track down. Good luck.

The only earlier version of TB I have access to is 16.0.2. Mozilla used to have earlier versions of TB available online, but not anymore.

    Guess I'm stuck :(.

No, no, Jim, never give in. Never.

Have you checked this site, and would any of these versions be worth trying:

Thanks for the link. I arbitrarily picked TB 12.0 and did a clean install, but the same thing happens ... TB closes when I try to add an attachment. I think I'll give a much earlier version a try ... v3.0, or thereabouts.

I downloaded TB 3.0, did a clean install and, lo and behold, I was able to add an attachment (a photo, in this case) and send the test message to myself. I tried it a second time, attaching a PDF file, and was again successful.

In looking through the posts on the TB support forum at Mozilla, I haven't found another post indicating the same problem, yet I find it somewhat hard to believe that it's unique with me.

I think I'll stick with TB 17.0 but, in case I find it necessary to send an attachment sometime in the future, it's nice to know that I'll be able to do it.

The last release, 17.0.2, seems to have solved the problem. Adding attachments no longer closes TB.
