    Running WinXP Home, SP2.
    I have 1 disk now and its defined as "C ", "D ", "E ", and "F "
    C is primary and D, E, F are partitions. Also have a DVD (G)
    and a CD-RW (H).

When i add another new disk, will it be assigned as "I" or
will it pick up "G" and the DVD, CD-RW be assigned as "H" and
    "I" respectfully?

Does the new disk need a Primary partition as well?

Also, i plan to make 4 partitions of the new disk using
Partition Magic. If WinXP assigns the new disk as "G "
(preferred), (meaning "H" and "I" for the DVD/CD-RW)
    what happens to the DVD/CD-RW if i assign "H ", "I" and
"J" as the new partitions (K and L?).

Sorry for all the letters so maybe this is better - Ignore the dashes,
    used for spacing only.

    Currently:
    HD--HD--HD--HD--CD--CD
    C---D--- E--- F---G ---H

    Desired:
    Disk1------------Disk2
    HD---HD---HD---HD---HD---HD---HD---HD---CD---CD
    C----D---- E----F-----G----H---- I---- J-----K----L

Go into Disk Management and assign drive letters X and Y to your optical drives.

Install the new drive which should then be recognised as G

Run Partition Magic or use the facilities in Disk Management to partition and format. Your partitions on the new drive will start at G for the first partition and run on from there.

Then, if you wish re-assign the drive letters to your optical drives. Many folk prefer to keep them as X and Y to avoid them being leapfrogged by additional drives - internal or external.

    Not for data storage purposes.

    PeteC,

    Thank you.
I'd much prefer to know whats going to happen than leave it to chance and
    get suprised, unfavorably sometimes.

I changed the drive letter assignments for the DVD and CD-RW to X and Y.
    No problems there.

When i changed the drive assignment of my zip drive (from I to W), it
disappears from the "My Computer" screen completely. It would normally appear
under "Devices with removeable storage ".

Under the control panel>System>Hardware>device manager>Disk Drives, it
shows as having the "V" assigned.
If i put in a zip disk, the system will find it and display the contents
correctly, so it works ok, just doesn't show in the Computer Screen. A cold
    boot didn't fix it.

How can i fix this so it will show?

    thanks,
    Clif

Try removing the zip drive in Device manager - disconnect the drive and reboot.

Shut down, reconnect the drive and boot up.

Well, removing and disconnecting the Zip drive, power down\up and then
    re-installing -

Made all 3 (ZIP, DVD and CDRW) disappear from My Computer and Explorer
screens. They were registered in the CP just fine, everything looks OK there.
    Just not showing as above.

Once more, i changed the drive letters in Disk Management to equal:
    DVD = U
    CDRW = V
    Zip = W
Still no show in MyComputer/explorer. The only way it works, it seems, is to
    use the original assignments (Zip = G, DVD = H and CDRW = I).

Back to original problem - Trying to get setup for when i add a new SATA HD
and have the Drive letters of G, H, I, J available for the new HD partitions.
Which means changing the drive letters for the Zip, DVD and CDRW to
    something after the J.

I am running Partition Magic 8 so maybe its the problem?? Altho, i thought
it only dealt with HD's (and other letters would be available for assignment).

Unless some other suggestions become available, i'll put the assignments
back to normal then wait until i put the new HD in and see what happens.

    thanks,
    savagcl
