Presently, I have a wireless modem on my 2nd floor with my computers attached. I use a laptop on the 1st floor via wireless but the connection drops out a lot.
I was wondering, since I have an extra extension available on the 1st floor, if I could connect a second spare modem to the extension.
Both the extension and the present modem are on a data only line if that makes any difference.

    1. What model wireless modem do you have?

    2. No, you cannot use 2 DSL modems on the same data line.

You can however, add a wireless range extender or a separate wireless access point to the existing network.

But the real issue is "why the signal is so weak only one floor down?" This is what needs to be addressed and corrected.

The modem is Verizon supplied Westell Model 7500. I just had the phone company out last week as every time the phone would ring it would cut off the computer even though they are two completely separate lines.
I have some range extenders I could install but I have tried to do that before and could never get them to work correctly.
I just wanted to know if that could be another available option. Thanks for your answer.

Just a note: I live in a small town rural area and DSL service is not the greatest. Some times it is fantastic and other times it is slower than dial up.

That modem-router has an internal antenna and it is know to have poor wifi range. The best alternative would be to purchase a separate standalone access point with dual antennas and connect it to the Westell by wire, then disable the Westell wifi. Set it as close as possible toward the downstairs.

many access points has removable antennas that can be swapped out for larger ones. Antennas alone are the main factor in wifi range.
