The 'add network printer' function fails to find a driver (HP Photosmart 7990). I can't find anywhere to download a driver, the HP sites claims that windows update will find it.

ok. I was able to install the printer. I tried to print a test page, nothing printed. When I tried to print another page, it says I need to install a printer.

How is the printer conmnected? USB to computer or network cable to a router/switch?

If connected by network cable you don't "add a network printer ". You "add a local printer connected to computer" and select a custom port, the port being Standard TCP/IP printing port. You will need to know the printer's IP address.

Connected USB to a computer. I might mention that I can print fine over the network from a notebook running XP. The way things stand now when I first boot up the printer icon shows up. After I try to print once, the icon shows a yellow "! ". Every attempt to print after that results in messages "Need to install a printer" or "the print spooler is stopped ". If I reboot, the printer icon is back to normal but no documents are in the queue.
