I bought a refurbished HP Workstation XW4000: Pentium-4 2.4GHz, 40-GB HD, 256MB memory, one CD ROM drive, one 3-1/2 drive, no OS.

    1. Installed MS Win XP home edition "“ no problems, worked fine.
    2. Installed MS Office 2003 "“ no problems, worked fine.
    3. Connected to SBC/ATT-DSL via my existing router "“ no problems, worked fine.
    4. Installed/upgraded to 1-GB memory "“ no problems, worked fine.
    5. Installed an NEC ND2550A DVD/CD RW drive "“ no problems installing, but since I did not have another audio cable, I removed the existing cable from the existing CD ROM drive and plugged to the new drive. Plan to buy another cable ASAP.
BUT "“ The PC does not boot-up properly "“ it goes into a repetitious cycle and won’t come out of it regardless of what I do.

Upon boot, a DOS-like initializing screen opens and says that it updated the configuration for the HD (40 GB) and for a CD-ROM. It says to press F1 to save changes, I do, and it says that it saved the changes, and goes to an HP screen that says to press F10 for setup or F12 for network setup. If I don’t do anything, after about 30 seconds it goes back to the DOS-like original screen. If I press F10 or F12, it immediately goes back to the DOS-like screen. All I have been able to do is to go back and forth between these two screens. How can I get out of this useless cycle?

    Thanks!

Well, never mind - thought about it long enough and solved it!

When it booted after adding the DVD drive, it only listed the HD and the CD ROM, but not the new drive. This made me think that perhaps both the original CD ROM and the new DVD drives where occupying or contesting for the same address.

Sure enough, after a little Googling, I found the installation manual for the ND3550A drive (.pdf file) and it shows that the jumper configuration the unit had (and as I installed) was as master. Since the original CD ROM drive was the only such drive, it must have been configured as master. Well by golly, we just can't have two of those (masters) in the same computer.

I switched the jumper to slave, it booted OK, recognized the new drive, and it is up and running. (Now to learn about this drive...)
