Is there a way to uninstall add/remove and reinstall

I mean the program it self, not the entries in add/remove.

    Thanx,
    Tom

My question pertains to a third party.

He has entries in A & R missing. He tried installing A & R again(i don't know how) he did it.Now he has four A&R programs in control panel.

My logic is maybe remove these and reinstall A&R.

    Thanx,
    Tom

    Tom,

I found this in an old thread:

This should rebuild the Add/Remove program for you.

I am not trying to find a way to remove add/remove entries, but rather the A&R program itself, then reinstall.

    Tom,

Once you find an entry, right click on it and select rename. Then just type whatever name you choose. Once the program is restarted, it should build a new file. Make sure you change all of the files, since he had four of them.

    tomron--
Why do you want to uninstall A/R?
Maybe I misunderstand, but it seems there are two reasons.
    1) that you friend has somehow installed more than one A/R folder in Control Panel.
    2) that your friend has more than four programs installed and is hoping the remainder will show up if the present A/R folders are removed.

Concerning 1) run a Search for Appwiz*.cpl. (note the Asterisk)
You should find only 3 or 4. The important ones are in I386, driverback, System32 and System32\DLLCache. If you find others, expecially with names like Appwiz[1].cpl, these are probably the extra ones. Right click on one|Delete and see what happens in A/R. (An alternative is what Minnesota Mike suggested. You rename by right clicking on the extra appwiz*.cpl file|Rename and rename to anything.) You might have to reboot to see the result. Either method disables the file, but they can be restored either from Recycle Bin or by naming back to the original. If you find only a file named appwiz.cpl in each of the above folders, I would forget deleting or renaming.

Concerning 2), I do not think it works that way. Your friend will probably wind up with a completely empty A/R at best.
First of all, some installed programs do not show up in A/R.
Another possibility is that someone/thing made some changes in the Registry.

If I have guessed the answers correctly and the above does not help, I suggest your friend reinstall a program that is expected to appear in A/R. Does it now show in A/R? If yes, then do it for other programs.
If that does not help, try Start|Run|type sfc /scannow|OK. Have the WindowsXP CD handy in case a message asks that it be inserted into the CD-ROM drive.
That should restore any corrupted System Files. Whether it will add programs back into A/R, I do not know. Your friend may still have to reinstall "missing" programs. But it should assure that appwiz.cpl and Control Panel are working properly.
