    Hello.

I have a Dell computer with Windows XP Pro OS.

PROBLEM: Whenever I start the computer, I get a window saying the computer found new printer, and the ADD NEW HARDWARE Wizard window appears.

I have a Lexmark X73 installed on computer that functions normally.

Evidently, at one time there was a Lexmark 1020 color printer previously installed on the computer, and the computer is still searching for the software.

(Note: in the Lexmark printer preference window I have the option of choosing either the X73 or the Lexmark 1020, but there is no 1020 printer.)

I tried removing and reinstalling the Lexmark X73 software, but the "found new printer" window keeps appearing, which slows down the startup process.

QUESTION: What is the best way to find and remove the old printer files and/or drivers.

    1) Should I edit the registry and remove these old printer entries? If so, where would they reside in the registry?

    2) Is there a way to distinguish the old Lexmark files from the new X73 files in the System 32 folder? I saw two "lex1020" files in the same folder as the X73 files, but I'm not sure if there is any association.

As always, everyone's help is appreciated.

    Thanks, Macpez

Just having the other drivers shouldn't cause any problems.

It sounds like your easiest approach will be to uninstall the X73 so you know there aren't any Lexmark entries you need and then scrub the registry and after it is convinced you have no printers, reinstall the all-in-one.

Take a look Here and item #2 for some good how-to on removing printers from 2K (and XP will be pretty much the same) including some registry locations to check and clear.
