I just downloaded the latest version of AdAware SE Personal, and somewhere along the line I clicked on getting the latest "DEFS ". A zipped file called Defs materialized on my desktop, which upon running, created a folder called DEFS.
I assume I can delete the zip file, but my main question is, do I have to keep the DEFS folder, or will the definitions somehow become "embedded" in the AdAware program itself once I've run the new version?
I don't remember having a separate DEFS folder before, and I'm not wild about having extra icons on my desktop -- but if for some reason the folder has to be kept accessible, I'm reluctant to move it for fear I may forget where I stashed it.
    Thanks for your help!
    Rebecca

rebecca: I have the same version of AA you do but never got the DEFS icon or folder. It should be safe for you to delete both of them. The worst that could happen would be you'd have to download AA again.

What you might do is to go to wherever you downloaded AA to, find the red AA Application icon, and right-click on it so a menu pops up. Hover over Send To, then click on Desktop (create shortcut). Now you'll have an AA icon on your Desktop, and whenever you want to check for updates, just open AA from there.

Will that do what you want?

rebecca--Do not know what you clicked on but it sounds like that file is defs.ref, a reference file file. I have never updated reference files manually. I always use "Check for updates now" on the opening window of AA.
I assume from what you say that you have installed the latest build (1.05) of SE Personal. If correct, you do not need that defs.ref file--certainly not on your desktop. You should already have the latest reference file dated September 13 as part of the installation of the new build 1.05. And the new defs.ref file (unzipped) should be in the same folder as all your other AA files.
But if not, or you do not have AA SE v1.05 (but still have v1.04), get v1.05 which should automatically install the Sept. 13 reference file as well. And if you have AA SE 1.05, but not the latest reference file (defs.ref) then, open AA, click on "Check for updates now "|Connect and follow directions.

    Thanks, guys!
I deleted both the zip file and the folder, and double checked for AdAware updates online afterwards (there were no new ones available), and AdAware still seems to be running just fine.
    :)

Jim - just a note but some business systems can't do the automated updates if the IT folks have hardened the firewall.

I have to download and do manual updates on both Ad-Aware and Spybot. Oddly enough, spywareblaster updates just fine.
