Working on a laptop that was eaten alive with a variety of nasties.

When the main user tried to run Ad-aware SE he would get the typical pop-up warning that we see with Sasser & Blaster about the PC having to shut down due to an RPC error.

I logged on with my domain admin account and did some cleaning including a bunch of junk via Hijackthis since the browser wouldn't behave otherwise and I needed to download some updates.

Got the cleaning done and started an Ad-aware scan. Immediately got the same RPC message. shutdown -a did as it is supposed to and the scan is continuing to run (and finding lots of baddies) but I'm curious about the behavior.

I had been logged on for at least a half hour cleaning things and did not see the message until about 30 seconds into the scan so I'm positive that's what triggered it.

    Hi Newt

Only just this week I was trying to help someone with exactly the same problem with an Ad-aware scan. RPC shutdown and the scan could not continue. I am still following up the matter but we eventually got the scan to continue by running it is safe mode but I am very curious now that I have read this post! If I can get any further feedback I will post back, I had asked him to use the cloak for Ad-aware in XP itself but so far I have not had any follow up (maybe he has been shut down but there he did find a things to clean in between times)

Thank you Tony for the links which will certainly be helpful when I have finished reading through them. At least we know it can happen with an Ad-aware scan as I am sure we will see more of these at some stage. Thanks again.

TonyT - Thanks for those links.

I'd still love to know exactly what was triggering the RPC shutdown when Ad-Aware was run and why. Easy enough to block it with a start=>run=>shutdown -a when the message pops up about the shutdown but from reading the links you posted - and especially the last very long one - I get a strong impression that the Lavasoft folks don't have a clue either.
