Downloaded the latest version of Ad-aware today at home and tried to uninstall my existing version as they recommend. I have the 6.181 version loaded at work and like the extra speed.

Kept getting a "Can't open INSTALL.LOG" error both from add/remove and from unwise.exe in the folder itself. XP-pro - no SP. Install.log is there and looks normal but the uninstall routine just won't work with it.

I guess at this point I need to try to find a copy of the version I'm running now and install it again to see if I can remove it then unless anyone has a better solution. And a link to any site that has the old one for download would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any idea what sort of issues if the new release is installed on top of the existing or to a different location?

    I had the same problem.

But I just used my old Win98 process of opening PowerDesk, Deleting the Folder and then let Norton WinDoctor clean up the leftovers, restarted Windows and installed the new version.

Ain't the correct way but it has worked many a time in anything from 95 on up.

Let us know what goes on,,
I had same thing but it was becouse I had used a restore point
(other things going on)so the installer didnt know where to look for the log.

strange thing adaware's host scan,, say it detected a search reroute (missdirect) But all I had there was google and spybots list.. so I tried an experiment . I emptied the host listing and then let Adaware put back what it says was a (sory cant remember exact words) ODD

Newt--Perhaps the solution to your problem will be found by posting at Ad-Aware's Forum
    http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/
P.S. I still have the install file for build 162 (1.5MB), but I am not sure what the legalities are for my sending it to you.

Alice--None of those are build 6. The last version before 6.181 was 6.162. I assume that is what Newt had prior to downloading 181. 6.162 is what I was offering.
I think the build 6 series started with 6.160. Reference files from build 5 won't work with build 6 and vice versa. The very latest reffile (7/17) won't work with 6.162 and earlier. Reffiles for build 5x and 6.162 and earlier are no longer being offered.
Newt--What is the date of your Install.log? If after 7/13, it seems you have the build 6.181 install.log in there already.

    Thanks all.

Jim - at work now and the problem is at home. I'll check it later tonight but I have whatever the most recent V6 was before this update. And appreciate the offer. I certainly can't see how sending the file would be a problem or a violation of anything.

And if the file should somehow be attached to an email and waiting at nvail@ctc.net, I certainly would never tell. :D

Lonny Jones--I try to stay pretty up to date on Ad-Aware. As far as I can tell there was no build between 162 and 181. There is a thread on the Lavasoft Support Forum that discusses the possibility of a build 180, but it seems Lavasoft was not aware of it.

    Hi Jim,

I don't have Ad-Aware installed, never did... well, almost never. One day a couple of years ago I installed it, then couldn't boot normally... I uninstalled it from Safe Mode the same day. Then, later on, Spybot S&D came along and that seems to be working fine for me.

Anyway, Newt asked for a link to the older version but never mentioned his existing version number. Guess only an Adaware user would know the version he was looking for ;)

    Hi Jim
Your probably right, when I spotted the new version (build) on another site besides Lavasoft , I checked within Adaware
low and behold right there in front of my face was a notice that a new build was available two in fact (maybe just a glitch) so I uninstalled the old and installed the newest, checked once more for updates and notice's there was still news about the next oldest version,, this only showed up the first two times I had opened it.

Any comments on the hosts scan ?

    Lonny

    Lonny Jones--
Good question. I do not know what Ad-Aware means by that and so have unchecked it from the scanning process.
I have assumed it means scanning my HOSTS file, but since I use my HOSTS file to block--rather than speed up--access to sites I have assumed AA would just tell me I have a bunch of baddies in there.
If anyone else knows the answer, I would like to learn, too.

Well - found a copy of the version I was running from somewhere. Installed it. Same error message about inability to open the install.log.

OK. Enough fooling around. Deleted it from program files and then did the install again. Hopefully it managed to hit all the same reg entries and just put new files on the system. Then was able to uninstall and load the latest and greatest.

Seems to be working OK and the latest version is much faster than the previous one so I'm hopeful.

    Somewhere, thank you very much.

from this i figure that you tried both the windows add/remove feature AND the program uninstaller? that right? i was going to recommend just using the windows add/remover, then a quick pass through with a regcleaner for good measure. that method has worked fine for me on three operating systems on this latest and greatest Ad-aware build...

    hth

    :)
