rcerrato --Thanks for the heads up!!
After all the problems (primarily multiple reports of the same Spyware Registry keys) I am looking forward to hearing the experiences of the brave few that try out v5.8.

I have the 5.8 and no problems. If you go to Lavasoft look on the left side of the page for links about the new 5.8. They changed the format of the reference files.

I'm running 5.8 on 3 machines now and having the usual error free success with it. Great program.

I got mine, it works as before!

I'm still wondering if it isn't something akin to cleaning your Registry or deleting your Temporary Internet Files but since it's little trouble, I'll stay with it.

I have to jump in here quick and ask a question about the new version.

I uninstalled the old one and installed the new one. I remember when I had the old one that it had found something like 10 or more spies. When I put the new one on, it found 7 spies! I'm wondering if I had the old one set up wrong and that meant that I had spies and didn't know it. Or, since it was old, then the 7 that the new one found were real sneaky ones that the old version just couldn't catch. I'm still pretty new to this program and wonder if I don't have it set up right to always watch for spies. Reading the help just  's me. Can someone walk me through to what I should have checked, or not? I keep a shortcut on my desktop to it and run it about once or twice a month. Should I be doing it more often? Does it do it automatically?

Thanks for any pointers on this.

    :)

Frankly Panda, I think it's all BS since I went without it for years and never missed it nor did I ever notice any improvement when I started using it.

I just keep it around for something to do. It's little trouble and causes no harm. As far as getting concerned about it's operations, I don't think it's worth the effort.

Every time I run it I get only one hit, DOUBLECLICK and when I delete it, it shows up immediately after I visit the internet again, so what's the value of erasing it?

It does make for a nice conversational topic however and tends to keep you tuned in to the latest happenings. I'll leave it to you to determine it's worth to you.

Zephyr--Doubleclick offers an Opt-Out cookie so you will not get their regular cookie
    http://www.doubleclick.com/us/corporate/privacy/privacy/ad-cookie/default.asp?asp_object_1=&

And thanks to the others who reported their experience with AA5.8. I now have installed it. Note that you cannot use old Reflists with AA5.8, and cannot use the AA5.8 Reflist with old versions of AA. And you cannot use RefUpdate (version 1.3) to update Reflists if you have AA5.8. Reflists are now called Reffiles and a RefUpdate.exe (version 2.0) to handle them has been issued today. Get it at

    Dadburn!

It's getting danged hard to keep up with the new AdAware's. Used to be a new one about every couple of months. They seem to come out with a new one every few days anymore. Getting to be a bit much, I say. :p

Apparent the spyware problem is as dynamic as the virus detection business. They're certainly having a time keeping up aren't they?

I hope the prevention doesn't get worse than the infection. I'll stick with it for another go-around just to see what turns out.

    brett,

Yes AA does delete that cookie, but you can keep it from getting on your computer to begin with.

Go to Start\Control Panel\Internet Options\Security. Highlight the red Restricted sites Icon. Click on the Sites button. Then in the white text bar write into it "doubleclick.com" without the quotation marks, then click add. Then OK on each window to set the command. Double click will never put a cookie on you putter again.

You can do this with any cookie you don't want on your putter. Just go open up a cookie file & copy & paste the last part of the site name into the Restricted sites thingy. Don't include any of the dots except for the last one before the com, net, or whatever. The other dots will nullify the command.

Deloris, you are right on.. AA does delete the Doubleclick cookie; however, I believe that AA ignores the cookie if you have done the OPT OUT. Someone out there correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain this is the deal!

Now then Deloris, what you describe for blocking cookies is only for IE/OE users, and not for Netscape users. This is what a Netscape user can do to block cookies:

Configure Netscape to accept all cookies, then make the cookie file "read only ". Sites will think you accept cookies but they will not be saved when netscape closes.

Another suggestion from Jay Garcia, Netscape Champion:

    To your HOSTS file, add:

    207.46.176.51 m.doubleclick.net

Not only will doubleclick ads not load but any information will be sent to/from Microsoft.

Whew! This cookie business is exhausting, non?

    Ramona :D
