I have a friend who's bought a new desktop PC, mainly to use for word processing church and community stuff. It's come with a copy of MS Works (which, as I understand it, includes MS Word). Unfortunately, the PC has come setup with a trial version of Office.

Unfortunate, because it needs to be activated. The phone activation is greyed out and she doesn't have an internet connection (which is the only activation option offered). Nor does she have a fixed phone line (her mobile phone is quite sufficient for her phone needs). How can I help her get her copy of Word running?

Her Word CD has a product number on it - the label describes it as being for Works and an Office Student/Teacher Trial - presumably because the trial hasn't been activated!

She tried installing Works, but to no avail - it looks like the system sees Works as already installed but superseded by the trial copy of Office. I'm guessing that, in the normal course of events, Works would activate once the 60 day Office trial comes to an end - only a guess, though.

Is there a known way to dump the Office trial and go straight to Works?

I'm sure she can't be the only person who wants to use Word without an Internet connection...

Have you looked in Add/Remove Programs?

Have you looked in the Programs list for MS Works - if supplied with a PC generally it is pre-installed.

    Pete,

No mention of Works - thought about that - remove it and reinstall in teh hope it would then supersede the Office trial.

Office was pre-installed. I could try uninstalling that but my worry is that it would still not allow Works to be installed.

I've suggested she takes the PC back to the shop she bought it to get them to get her a working version of Works/Word.
