OK: In my traditionally rambling way, I hope I can exposit my problem succinctly. (Well, there's ALWAYS a first time....)

Here at work I have four or five people who can get onto the main computer and "do things" to it. Not an optimum situation, but unavoidable, as they're all "Chiefs" and this "Indian" don't gots much to say about it.

We have Acrobat 8.0 installed and it was working just fine (until ? not sure just when problems would have started) I went to change the security setting on a PDF file to allow it to be read by anyone.

Can't change the settings and don't know why, but - in the past - when Adobe starts doing "funny things" it has been my practice to re-install over the program, either as a "repair" or as a new "full install ". This has always fixed whatever problems may have existed, until now.

I find that someone (Who, ME? Not ME!) downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 9.3 to the computer and I *think* that having both it AND Acrobat is causing me problems.

Main problem is that I am not able to remove or change a security setting from a PDF, which, the last time I tried it (about six months ago), worked just fine.

So I went to re-install Acrobat 8 again and got the message:
I don't even know what they're talking about!

    Help?

*** Yeah, sure.... trying to talk to six levels of incompetence just thrills me to the very core....

Can't help you there. Just hoping somebody would come along with some solution.

In general, installing Adobe 8 & Adobe Reader 9 on the same computer should not cause any such problem, but it seems you have had problems with Adobe 8 in past.

If you just want to convert documents to PDF, why don't you try any of the free PDF converters ? They may not have the bells & whistles, but they get the job done & they are free.

Steve, sorry about that... everything got 'shelved' for a while due to other problems. We still can't get rid of the security on the created PDF's, but I'll be back on this in about two weeks. Meantime, if it's not a problem, leave this open...

I your file was opened and saved with Adobe Reader 9, you are probably experiencing a compatibility problem. If possible find someone with Adobe Acrobat 9 on their computer, then see if you can open the file and work with it. Here is a good source of information for you: http://www.adobe.com/support/acrobat/
I found the following page which mentions compatibility. This may be why you are having your problem: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Standard/WSD012A4E1-51D1-4bcd-BA9F-EF03C6F20BB6.html
I have no idea why the reinstall of Acrobat 8 did not work. There is a good chance there may be something on the Adobe website on this.
Hope this helps or points you in the right direction.

As for the newly installed Adobe Reader 9, it probably came via Adobe Updater. I always disable Adobe updates to Reader by going to program files / common files / adobe / updater and run the updater.exe. After it runs and checks for updates you can click on Preferences. Uncheck everything. Then delete the adobe startup programs in registry at hklm/software/ms/windows/current version/run.
