It appears I am having an issue with ACPI BIOS on XP Pro machine, a pIII 933mhz 512 MB of ram system.

I have noticed in the event log that it was giving me issues for some time but it hasn't given me a real problem until now. It started to give me some time related issue when I started the computer after it was turned off. I would hit reset then it would come back and boot up and be fine.

Now however it either locks up at the XP Pro screen, or if I get into windows after a while it just locks up period.

I suspect I'll have to try the BIOS upgrade first. I have begun to research the proper way to do this but wanted to touch base with the members here first. I have checked out MS KB Q283649.

Has anyone experienced this problem, and had it eradicated after doing a BIOS upgrade?

Also, I know my motherboard is a VIA. Can someone recommend the proper way to identify the systems BIOS so one can download what is needed to burn an upgrade?

Thanks for your help. I always want to be cautious when working on anything BIOS related.

    Thanks!

You may have a conflict between the BIOS ACPI and the WinXP ACPI. Try disabling the BIOS ACPI and see if it helps with just the WinXP ACPI active. Also try the reverse to see which one is best.

BTW, your Mother/Main Board is not a VIA, it just uses a VIA chipset. Check any hardware manuals you may have to determine the Make and Model of your M/B. HTH. :)

Well I disabled the BIOS ACPI. I couldnt get it to boot to windows at all. Even in safe mode. Noticed it stopping at mup.sys. When I renabled the BIOS ACPI I was able to get to windows. But it locked up shortly after.

By the way, on my invoice it states my MB is an "EPOX 3VCA VIA 133 4X ATX ".

Browse the Epox site for BIOS update files for your 3VCA motherboard, including any Flash utility and complete *BIOS Flashing* instructions.

Did you try disabling ACPI in WinXP?

No not the WinXP ACPI, I did the above on a quick break from lunch. I have to search on where to do that as well.

I have gone to the site and made the floppy, when I get back there tonight Ill give it a go. Looks familiar now after reading the readme. Seems its over a year old though. (The newest BIOS)
