While on-line (dial up), I get an sound very similar to acoustic feedback coming from my system speaker. Not that I have anything against Jimi Hendrix but it is quite annoying and only occurs if you leave the computer undisturbed for a few minutes. I've tried a few things to no avail. I'm thinking of a more direct approach such as cutting the wires to the speaker. Is this too extreme? Other than beeping when you boot up, is the little speaker in the tower anything but a vestige of the old no sound card days?

    MIC on?

Did you check to see if your microphone is set to Mute?
