Ive had this problem for sometime and just can't work it out so i could use some help please. I've looked around for this problem but i can't get anything specific to my circumstances.

I have a ACER (travelmate240) laptop and its wired to a Linkeys ADSL2 gateway with your average network cable. In my house i have 3 laptops two of which can connect to the gateway fine they can access the net and the network place.

My laptop is having the problems, i can only access other laptops on the network if i give myself a static ip,sub, gateway and DNS but when i do this i can't ping the gateway or get on the internet. But i can ping my own ip, can ping other laptops of the network and access my network places.
The static info i entered was this:

    IP:192.168.1.81
    Sub: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS: 195.95.195.95
    DNS2: 195.95.195.94

So i tried to obtain the IP etc automatically but all i got was a Automatic Private Address. The i.ps were:

    IP : 164.254.10.35
    Sub: 255.255.0.0

No gateway address came back or DNS, so i checked the services to make sure DHCP was on and it was. I also pinged my network card and that worked as well. I swapped the cables around with the other laptops that can connect to net and my cable worked on theirs but theirs didn't work on mine.

    (sorry for all this detail)

Next i went to cmd and tried to release the ip which worked but then i tried to renew the ip and all i got back was "an error occured whilst renewing your interface internet. unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out "

THEN!! i tried to do ipconfig/all and this what i got and i don't uderstand it and very unsure of what to try next:

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

I will also include the ipconfig/all for one of the laptops that is connected to the same network which works perfect:

What i have noticed when looking at my log and the good log is that the good log tells me that IP routing is enabled and my laptop it ain't, could that be the reason, if so how can i enable ip routing on my laptop.

Sorry for the very long post but its being driving me up the wall and am in need of some help, thanks in advance.

I think it is better you reinstall the driver for your network card of your laptop.

169.254.x.x is not the right ip address that got from DHCP server. I believe that the problem is your laptop can't communicate with DHCP server well. Because:

    1. You have proved the DHCP was working.
    2. The cable had no problem.
    3. Also, you laptop work well with the the static IP address you setup.

easiest and best for static ip is such:
    IP:192.168.1.81
    Sub: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS: 192.168.1.1

Let the router handle the DNS for you rather than Windows. The router maintains and refreshes a table of your isp's dns servers. You can view this table in the router Status page. If the router synches w/ the modem then it will grab & store the isp dns server addresses.

Check to see that proxy in lan settings is unchecked

Check to see that the proxy server setting is not checked on and should be unchecked forcing the connection through the proxy of an older network to which you do not have privledges.

Your laptop does not have a proper IP so I assume that there is no DHCP. Your NIC seems to be acting properly but when you let the computer to get automatic IP it gives you an unroutable. Put in a static within the same range as the other machines. You should have no problems. Also you could try swapping cables with a working machine. Just a thought.
