I have an Acer aspire5517 with windows7. Suddenly my touchpad will not work but with a mouse the cursor is fine. I tried system restore.I then went to devise manager and it said all devises were up to date. I do not know what to try at this point.

Hi Jerry. I would try updating the touchpad driver for your laptop first and see if that fixes the problem. Download the driver from this page, Acer Drivers and Manuals.

Enter the laptop model to get the drivers that are available. After the new touchpad driver installs, reboot the computer and see if the touchpad works. Also try clicking Start< Control Panel< Hardware and Sound< Under Devices and Printers click on Mouse and see if you can change the settings for the touchpad.

Look in the Control Panel and make sure it isn't disabled.

Well there isn't much else that can be done other than getting the laptop looked at and fixed by a computer technician.

Clearly the touchpad is not working properly and no amount of software tweaking is going to fix a hardware problem. You could try booting the computer into Safe Mode and seeing if the touchpad works there but I wouldn't get my hopes up. You should still mark the thread as resolved once you get the touchpad fixed.
