A 2.93Ghz Pentium 4 is no slouch. It will be a "mobile" version (not a standard/desktop version). P4's may not go much higher and a small increase in speed may not be worth the effort. What do you need the extra speed for NEILMAC?

I went to the Acer USA website, but I should have noted you are in Scotland. I looked up Drivers and Dowloads and only found an Aspire 1800, but those should be the ones for the 1800 series. It went to the Windows XP drivers, but on a set of tabs there was a BIOS download and the User Manual. Look at the UK website.

In the BIOS zip file it is labelled a MS-7094, which would be an MSI motherboard model. You could try finding CPU information at MSI.

Look up the Pentium 4 Mobile range for what speeds are available, but I don't think you could go much higher. I would ask if an increase of ~500MHz would be worth the effort.

Look in the text file supplied with the BIOS upgrade. The one I found says this
I think the Winbond upgrade might help with your (current) CPU.

There is something wrong with the information I found and that you state it is a Pentium 4 CPU. That motherboard I mentioned, MS-7094, is an AMD based system. See what you find at the Acer website.

Oops, my bad. I was looking at the wrong BIOS download. The text file for the 1800 does not contain any details about the motherboard model or what it changes.

Ummm, according to the acer aspire 1800 user manual the system is a 800fsb (2.8 > 3.6ghz, 520>560 processors), but a bit of searching does show links to the 1801wsmi with a 533fsb ie: 515 processor, this unit is not listed on the acer site for some reason?
All the processors are LGA775 units so I might suggest a search on the intel site for a suitable upgrade at the right FSB 533 or 800?

    Good luck
