    HI,
I formated my HDD and installed win98...etc..and buyed a accton en2226 pcmcia fast ethernet card to connect the armada 1575d laptop to my Home PC (athlon xp 2500+,512ddr...) with Nvidia integrated LAN card...
I installed the correct drivers and when i plug in the crossover cable into the pcmcia card my main PC begins to stop respondig every 5 seconds for about a second.. and windows xp tells me that there is no connectivity.... I have set up everything correctly and assigned 192.168.0.1 to my main pc and 192.168.0.2 to the armada laptop....tried to ping in both directions but it doesnt work...i checked the cable a few times and its ok.
my ip is autoassigned and 164....
i also tried to release and renew through ipconfig but it says dhcp not avaliable....same message when try to run wntipcfg..

want just to add that one LEDs on PCMCIA card is orange (link integrity) and the other blinks green when my computer stops respondig...every 4-5 seconds..

    plz help me..

Just to make sure I'm clear on what is happening here, I gather you have

    - a PC with two network cards. One connected to a broadband modem and the other connected to a 2nd PC you have.

If that is the case, are you still able to reach the internet on your main PC? Are you trying to use ICS to allow the two PCs to share the single modem/internet connection?

If your setup isn't like I describe, please give more details.

Adsl broadband (usb modem, no router)

Im still able to reach the internet on my main pc and i tried to use ICS.
I ran the Small home or office network setup wizzard and set it up and made a netsetup disk and installed it correctly on the laptop....

Thanks for the clarification. That helps.

The XP networking wizard does a nice job of creating an install disk that works on other XP systems. Unfortunately and for reasons I can't figure out, on other OS versions it often seems to work but sets things up where they don't work. Easier to get the ICS Host machine set up and then do all the client machines by hand.

If the host PC's internal network card is set up properly with 192.168.0.1 / 255.255.255.0 and the gateway address blank, the client PC should do fine set to automatically obtain an address but I sorta favor the same approach as you with setting values.

192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.0 and a gateway address of 192.168.0.1 is fine. But with a static address, you expect ipconfig /renew to fail since you've told the system to use the static and not to allow the auto-renewal.

The most likely source of problems at this point, assuming you know the crossover patch cable is properly wired and is good, is some sort of speed mismatch between the two network cards. Try setting the speed & duplexing on both cards to the same value rather than letting them 'auto' negotiate. Start with 10Mbps half-duplex on both and if that works, you can keep trying faster settings to 100Mbps Full-duplex if you want. It won't make any difference to internet speeds but will allow faster file sharing between the two PCs if you are doing that.

Try setting both PCs to 100Mbps Full-duplex and see what happens. If the problem gets worse, you may have a bad network card. If it stays the same, we can dig around some to locate and cure whatever it is.

now i cant ping in any way.....

the IPs are ok the main pc is 192.168.0.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) and laptop is 192.168.0.2 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0 with 192.168.0.1 gateway)

in ipconfig /all on the laptop it says that dhcp is disabled...could this be the problem?

If you set a static IP address on a PC, you effectively disable it from using DHCP.

And based on your symptoms, I do think you have a hardware issue with the NIC.

hi again... i had no time to go to my friend and borrow a new nic, but i have experimented these 2 days and i managed it to see my main PC from the laptop with netbios enabled, but i cant access it. (i enabled the guest account in windows xp)

the problem is i cant see the laptop from my main PC...

and i just want to add that i dont get the network cable unplugged message anymore...it conntect properly 100Mbit FD

other strange thing is that my LAN connection status in windows xp shows:

    Packets sent: about 300-500
    packets received: 0 (strange)

That sounds like a firewall issue maybe.

Good news about the connection staying up though.

When you said 'netbios', is that what you meant or did you load NetBEUI? At this point, I'd suggest that. 98 has it readily available but for XP, go to the Microsoft online help site and search the XP section for NetBEUI and you'll find an article telling you exactly how to set it up.

Since NetBEUI is unaffected by the sort of firewall we run, it may well give you connectivity and if not, will help figure out what isn't right.

Note that even with the XP guest account active, you need to be logging onto 98 with a username and non-blank password. NetBEUI requires that both PCs be in the same workgroup as well.
