I accidentally deleted/disabled the admin account the last time I was in my control panel. When I login I get "Your account has been disabled. Please see your system administrator." How do I get back in if there is no other user account?

    Hi, Jim.

I assume you already tried logging into Safe Mode (by repeatedly tapping the F8 function key during boot-up) to bring up the Administrator account clickable icon?

When I enter safe mode I get the same "Log On to Windows" screen demanding the admin password as when I boot normally (except the splash screen in the background clearly indicates that the PC is in safe mode...).

It is not possible to remove the Administrator account other than in a Domain setting. Even in that instance, a Domain Administrator account is substituted.

If you do remove the Adminsitrator, XP will simply rebuild the account for the local or Domain Adminstrator.

It simply is not possible to completely remove the Administrator account. XP would not boot otherwise.

Try again to log in to Safe Mode as Administrator. You may have to do ctrl+alt+del two times at the initial Safe Mode log-on screen to bring up the Admin. log-on box. When you get it, type administrator in the name field and leave the password field blank. If you have never set a password, you should be able to get into Safe mode as Admin. that way. If so, then you should be able to reset anything that needs setting as regards your regular User account.

OK, in safe mode I was able to log in normally, whereas my account was 'disabled' in normal mode. However, when I go to Control panel/User Accounts, I was not able to un-disable the Admin account (it is not shown as an option). I can login with my admin password in safe mode, but I don't know how to make changes to 're-enable' the admin account so i can login in normal mode. Again, any recommendations greatly appreciated!

Again, the admin account is working normally. As noted by Bill Castner above, it is impossible to remove the Admin account.

What you most likely did is remove a user account that had administrative privileges.

By default, the Administrator account is not displayed on the Welcome Screen. To log in to the Administrator account, press Ctrl+Alt+Del, release the Del key, and press it again, while still holding down the Ctrl+Alt keys. This will change the Welcome Screen login to the Windows 2000 style log in, where you can now type Administrator and the password for the Admin account.

Anyway, which way you get into the Admin account, just create a new user account with Administrative privileges (default).

I'm sorry for not being more specific- my problem is that I am at the windows 2000 login screen (I think that's the right description) and I enter the admin username and password, and windows tells me that the account is disabled. here is a link to a picture of my login screen with the error message:
    http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p209/jmediatore/loginscreen.jpg

I CAN login in safe mode on the admin account, but I would like to be able to use my PC outside of safe mode! I need to know how to 're-enable' the admin account so i can login normally. I realize the disabling of the admin account may be theoretically impossible according to some- if anyone can sum this problem up in different language by all means give me a hand please! Thanks again for your suggestions so far.

    Well done!
Just so you know, there is a HUGE difference between deleting and account and disabling an account!
