Accessing Mail Merge Recipient List

I am trying to edit my recipient list that was typed into microsoft office word. I keep getting the following message: "This operation cannot be completed because of dialogue or database engine failures. Please try again later." I did try later and I still get the same message.

What can I do to get access/edit my address list?

I am using Word 2003. I am trying to edit a mailing list. Yes, I am still using the same computer and program that I used when originally creating the mailing list. I accessed the program through Microsoft Word-tools-Envelopes and Mailing-Mail Merge. When I try to edit the mailing list I get the following error message: "This operation cannot be completed because of dialogue or databased engine failures. Please try again later." When I try later (from minutes to hours later), I get the same message.
