A hard drive was removed from a faulty PC with XP Pro SP3 and mounted to a PC with Windows Vista SP1. A folder of the hard drive was not accessible initially from the Vista. Then after a few attempts, and under the security tap, the owner of the folder and the files changed. Then the folder and its document could be accessed in the Vista.

But then after putting back the hard drive to the repaired PC (actually just too dusty), the Windows XP could boot up normally. But then clicking into the My document of the user (with System Administrator's right), the folder was denied from access. Right clicked the folder could not find the security tag to change the owner back to the original user.

Is there a right-way to change the owner of the folder and the files beneath back so the login user (with administrator rights) can enter into that folder like other folders?

    Problem solved! Thank you PeteC.

Before I posted the problem, I already tried to take ownership of the folder and files inside. I did it successfully when I mounted the hard drive to a Windows Vista machine, but failed when it was connected to Windows XP Pro SP3 machines. It was failed because I could not find the Security tab from the properties of the folder.

    Solution:
To bring the Security tab, what is needed is to disable the Simple File Sharing.
Details can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=tech and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874/

After disabled the Simple File Sharing, and from the Security tab, I got the way to assign the owner with the desired user account. And the problem has gone.
