Not sure that this belongs here but everything I have done points to the operating system and permissions. I have tried several things after posting questions on other forums with no satisfactory solution. I will include the post I placed on SyncToy forum which has had numerous views but no responses/replies. If this is the wrong forum for this please advise and I will repost in the appropriate one. Thanks and here is the post which outlines the problem:

I have a laptop and desktop both running Windows 7 and I want to synchronize files between the two devices. I have downloaded SyncToy 2.1 and created a test folder pair to see that everything worked properly before I dive in to doing a complete setup of the files I need to keep synced. I had a folder named Medical containing six files that I selected to make the test pair. The folder existed on both computers with the same files in them. I changed one file within the foler, i.e "Medications" and split the data within the file by taking half of the date and copying it to a new file and called it "Sharon Medications ". I then attempted the sync to see if it worked and got the following log: Error: Unknown error Access is denied..... Source File: Sharon Medications.docx Source Path: C:\Users\Don and Sharon\Documents\Medical Last Modified: 2/17/2010 4:50:23 PM Target File: Sharon Medications.docx Target Path: \\DANDSDESKTOP-PC\User\DonandSharon\Documents\Medical. Thank you for any input. I really like SyncToy and really hope to get it working properly.

I suspect that you'd first have to setup a network with the two comps and shares on each. Once that's done, test by transferring files between the comps. Then you'd have to setup that sync pgm to use those shared folders.

Thank you TonyT for getting back to me. That has been done and the shares are set up and I had done all that before I set up the test for SyncToy. Don't know what is causing the problem but all the research that I have done makes me think it has something to do with Windows 7 permissions, etc. Don't understand all I know about that. I have Windows 7 x64 on both machines. I have tried changing the permissions and have not been successfull. Both computers are networked and I can access either of them from the other and have done that using Team Viewer and other programs. I share printers without problems and I am able to open files from one to the other but someimes I get the access denied message when I create a file on one computer and try to transfer it to the other. I am hoping that someone will come up with a solution somewhere along the way because I would really like to synchronize many things between the two of them.

Thanks again for your input - this forum rocks.

SyncToy will have to have OK from windows firewall/other firewalls.

Try rt clicking SyncToy and select RunAs Admin...

Apparently there is little information out there relative to this problem so am going to mark it as resolved although it really isn't. If I discover further information relative to this I will reopen the thread. Thanks to TonyT for his input.
