access denied on folder

I have connected my laptop hardisk to my pc. the laptop had xp installed and there were some restrictions in place so other users than me couldn't view my files. Now the laptop is broken and i want to copy exactly those files to my pc, but each time i try and access them i get the message that 'access is denied'.. is there any way i can get hold of those files?? all other files on the disk i can look at so there is no fault with the hardware.
