Is there a reason for this to happen? I installed a new "F" HD-80G. My previous "C & D" HD-30G was and "still is fat32" the new drive is nfts. I cut and pasted my music files from D:\my music to F:\my music. Now it says that the folder is there but it is empty and that I do not have access to it. My old folder is also empty. Did I lose everything and why don't have access to my files and folders?

    Hi

I am not sure if this will help but Try taking ownership of the folder. Right click the folder then ~ properties ~ security ~ advanced ~ owner make sure your user name is in "Change owner of this item" Check the box marked "Replace owner on sub-containers and objects ". (make sure simple file sharing is not checked)

It may be the NTFS security has done something - hopefully the files are there & just need open access. It is strange the original folder is empty as you simply copied the files:confused:

If you do get things sorted you may be wise to use TweakUI for transferring files & folders in this way. You would then be able to change the location a lot easier. XP stores all the files in the default location which is not great as they are with the OS.

Hopefully the above will help sort this one.

Which OS were you booted too when you did the copt?

Which OS were you booted to when you get the denied message?

I was using my XP OS for both. Yes I should have used copy instead of paste.

I do not have a way to insure ownership from the way you suggested. Or I'm looking in the wrong place.

If you run XP-pro and NTFS, then you certainly should see the "owner" tab with Right click the folder then ~ properties ~ security ~ advanced. If you don't, something is very wrong.

This seems to be pretty much an XP topic so moving the thread there.

Well maybe this will help explain something. My OS is on my D drive which is not nfts but fat32. When it boots I'm guessing that it does so as an fat32. My F drive is nfts which is where I want to save stuff.

If I move something over to my F drive from (C or D) does it automatically convert it to nfts or not?

I have always felt that something isn't correct? "Newt" if you
look back @ some of my previous posts you'll see that I've asked questions into the proper installation of the new drive.

I would like to answer any questions anyone has and would enjoy anyones help.

IF you're booting up with a fat 32 drive, it can't see/use an NTFS drive.

However, if you boot off the ntfs drive, it'll see/use the fat32 drive.

"If I move something over to my F drive from (C or D) does it automatically convert it to nfts or not?" -> Yes

    thanks Steve,

Does that mean that I do not have things set up properly?
Because I have had problems with my puter seeing my F drive. occasionally I have to go into bios and auto detect my drives.

Please ask me some questions and I'll try to answer them insted of me asking questions that r not pertinant.

I now see a post by emill that seems to address the same issue. I will peruse the post and try there solution.

Which doesn't mean that I still don't have something else wrong and the post doesn't tell me whether the files were there when they corrected the problem. will get back to you.

OK, I now have my folders with my files there. However I don't seem to be able to play them in winamp (music) or Media player (videos). I may not have completely gained access.

But in general my problem was addressed by the post or thread located @ microsoft knowledge base article - 308421

will continue to tinker until I hear back .
