I have a friend who's son decided it would b a good idea to put some **** on her new laptop and now its having a bit of bother (NEVER I hear u all say)

I have managed to remove numerous trojans, viruses, spyware. Have run the latest AVG, SPybot and Adaware and ran RAV online anti virus as well.

However her browser is stil hijacked continuosly and her registry editing gets disabled at the same time.

I also ran Hijackthis (latest version) and I fix several R0 and R1 entries for about:search and adaware finds 2 reg entries 1 changing the homepage the other disabling the registry editing and alls fine...until its rebooted...and they are back to the same.

I disabled the restore (its windows XP Home, SP 1a, kinda relucant to put sp2 on just yet) but still these items appear, I fix them..they come back!

Any ideas what I'm dealing with? I tried a google search on about:search and it mentioned a toolbar...but she hasn't got one of those.

Thanks for your help once again ;)

Download CWShredder from here. Save it to the desktop. Open it, close ALL other windows and click fix. Reboot, surf a bit and run another HJT scan, then post the log. Make sure you are using the current version, 1.98.2

Well I'm glad you got that sorted, because your log didn't give any clues as to where it was coming from and I was about to have you download a hidden dll scanner to help locate it. I am a bit concerned about this entry though.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [syschk] syschk.exe /fastcheck

Most of what I've found on that executable suggest a virus, but parts of the entry don't match up with the one's shown for it. I would suggest you do an online scan with RAV for good measure.

I suspect that line also, and it's twin.
