I am using Thunderbird Mail....latest version....just installed it after uninstalling the previous version so it was a clean install.

Question is this....Under Tools-----> Options-----> Attachments and then in the Files Types below box, I do NOT have any entries at all..None.... Should I have something there. Like JPG, Gif, Wizip, Exe, and Winrar file types and shouldn't they say, either "Save to Disk" or "Open With "?

I think I had those kinds of file types listed there in the older version before I uninstalled it,I remember seeing some there, but since I installed the newest latest version of Thunderbird and used RegSeeker to clean the registry I don't have one file type listed there. The jpg,psd and gif icons are associated with ACDSee on my computer under *File Types* in Windows Explorer, but they don't show up with the ACDSee icons when I receive them in mail as attachements,They have the Windows data file icon when I receive them in Thunderbird mail now ,however, when I save as...they save OK. It is no big problem, I am just wondering where and\or how Thunderbird reads the Mime types or File type from, and if anyone possibly knows why it shows all the gifs, psds and jpgs, and some others as 'windows data icons' instead of the icons which are correctly associated with the programs I have them associated with.

    Thanks a lot.

    Vanilla Ice,

Thunderbird ignores the windows explorer file extension associations. The MIME types are read from mimetypes.rdf file, located in your Profiles folder.

If you open the attachment, tell it to use the default player, and check the checkbox to remember that setting, it will automaticly call that utility whenever you open an attachment with that file extension.

Thanks for your response Ramona. I know I can save the gif-jpg-winzip etc. files with the *save as* option and then *open* them with the associated program of each of them or I can *open* the files with the *Open with* option instead of the save as. I don't have a problem doing either of those things, but was curious as to why Thunderbird refuses to show the gif -jpg-winzip-winrar or whatver file comes in as an attachement with an email, with the windows data icon instead of the icon of the program it is associated with. It always shows everything with the generic data file icon. I guess that it just how it is, with my TB anyhow,, but why does Thunderbird have a 'View and Edit Actions' option box if it is never going to put any file types in it. Sort of useless I think, but thanks a lot for your reply.

I never had a problem with any attachment sent to me. I, recently, got 24 .gif files, which were visible inline, and all of them were properly marked, and they could be downloaded. The fellow who sent them, used Yahoo mail. But, I did receive attachments sent with Outlook, which were viewable inline, or were downloadable. Of course, zipped files would not be viewable. I am having problems understanding what is going on. It seems to me that it is the sender who sends, as Ramona says in a way which is understandable by the Microsoft software, but not by TB. But, I never had any problem. In TB the attachments are listed in a toolbar-like area above the Status Bar.

    Vanilla Ice,

Sorry for all the useless information! More to the point, I really don't know why Thunderbird shows a Windows Icon, rather than the ACDSee icon on the attachments you receive. When you look in Windows Explorer | Tools | File Types, does the ACDSee icon show up in the file types it opens? Or does it use the Windows Icon? However, if when you save the attachment, it does show the ACDSee icon, I would think that your File Types must be correct.

That's the first time I have seen this occurrence in Thunderbird. I'll see if I can find an answer for you...

O.K., I did find a bug, and it has a workaround that you might try, to add to the File Types:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=244618#c13

A question for you: when you did the clean install of TB, did you also create a new Profile, or are you using the same Profile? The mimeTypes.rdf file, in your Profiles folder contains the File Types that should show in the File Type options. If you did create a new Profile, then copy the mimeTypes.rdf file from your old Profile, to the new.

Another question: have you tried sending the same type of attachment to yourself? If not try that and see if it comes in with the Windows or ACDSee icon. I'm thinking the sender would have more to do with this than you.

Still looking for more info on the Icon problem.

*LOL* Thank you Ramona. At least YOU understand what I am trying to say. Yes, when I save the gif or jpg file or even a zip or rar file which someone may send to me in Thunderbird, after I save the gif or jpg to my graphics folder it shows up with the ACDSee icon to which it is associated. The same goes for the zip or rar files. After I save them, they show up with the correct icons also...zip files are associated with Winzip and rar files are associated with WinRar on my machine. So, according to your excellent info, my File Types are set correctly. Also, when I uninstalled the old vesion and went to the latest version of TB...I did do a clean install , however, I did use my old profile from the previous version. Indeed, It may be a problem with the sender as some use gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc. Also, I have sent different type of files to myself, they send out with the correct icon but when they come in, they still show up with the windows icon instead of the correct one.
Maybe it's my ISP or something, I dunno what it is but am hoping someday I can straighten it out. Thanks for the workaround Ramona, and for taking the time to look for an answer for me on this. I know you are always really busy here and so again, for your help and for all you do to help me .

    [Note to Westside]

Ramona understands what I am saying about the windows icon showing up when I receive any gif-jpg etc. files in place of the associated program icon. I am sure if you ask her she can probably explain it to you, better than I can as I don't want to confuse you.]
