I installed XP on an old [600 MHz] PC I have which was/is running W98. When I started the install, it told me that I could not upgrade W98 to XP, but that I had to do a clean install of XP. So, I let it do that. After I did that I noticed that I had two OS's to choose from at boot up, XP and the old W98 (which seemed to be completely unaffected by the XP install).

I have two hard drives on this PC, the original one and a 100GB drive which I added a few years ago for backups.

I just now discovered something regarding the XP install. It got installed on my second hard drive! No wonder it didn't affect the W98 installation. How did it "know" to do that? I did not notice any indication while the install was running that that was where it was going. What if I only had one hard drive? Would the XP install have wiped out my W98?

I guess this is OK for now, but after I get everything moved from the W98 that I want to move to XP, is there a way I can "move" the XP to the "C" partition?

    Thanks.

Presumably both hard drives contain a single partition - XP looked for a free partition - that was your second hard drive :) There should have been some sort of dialogue on the install screens which maybe you missed.

You cannot move XP as such, but if you disconnected the 98 drive and connected the XP drive as Master and ran fixboot from the Recovery Console I think that would enable the system to boot, but whether or not the drive would become 'C' I am not too sure.

Well, actually, I have several partitions. On the primary drive I have 3: The C partition is ~4GB. There is a hidden partition that is about 3GB, and the E partition is ~6GB. On the secondary drive I have 3 partitons: The D partition is 7+GB, the F partition is 4+, and the G partition is ~80GB. The G partition is the one I use for backups. That's where the XP installation was placed. Strange.

Suppose I removed the secondary drive, and redid the installation with only the primary drive in the PC. That's the one where the W98 is. What would happen? Would it wipe out the W98?

With the exception of your backup partition all the other partitions are very small and probably do not have enough free space for XP to install - I would say that a minimum of 10 Gb for Windows and your programs which would include at least 25% free space - required for successful defragging.

If you removed the secondary drive and installed XP on the primary drive - although IMO none of the partitions are large enough - your installation of 98 will not be wiped out. The first blue screens of the installation dialogue clearly give you options as to which partition you would like to install XP on.

Thanks for the info regarding the partition sizes, etc. That must be why it "chose" the G partition.

I can't imagine how I could have missed any prompts regarding where the XP installation would be placed. Guess I'll just keep more of an eye out.
