AVG (I keep it up-to-date) ran as scheduled last night and came up with this, "virus detected (worm/LovsanA)â€.

Could someone please answer these questions, thank you!

1: What is the LovsanA worm and how dangerous is it?

2: Do I need to call everyone in my address book and tell them not to open any Emails from me?

3: AVG said it healed it but is it real gone? I don’t know how to tell.

4: LovsanA worm is (was?) in C:windows/system32/MSBLAST.EXE, is this the MSBLAST I heard about a while back? If it is how do I get rid of it?

5: I downloaded some windows updates including SP1a over the weekend, could it have caused this? (Took forever on a dialup 46,666k connection!)

6: I think it is in the system restore folder to, what can I do about this?

System info, Windows XP home SP1 installed.

    Thank you for your time.

ON EDIT: I just looked in my AVG virus vault and found this" MSBLAST.EXE, 10/14/2003 1:16:42, C: windows/system32/MSBLAST.EXEâ€.
Dos this mean the AVG got rid of it?

    Tom Cat,

You may want to take a look at this page. It's from Norton about the Blaster worm, which is the same as the two you mention. There is also a removal tool and manual removal instructions there. I would run the tool to make sure that the worm is gone. I would guess that AVG did remove it, but better to check again.

As far as your friends... I would think an email explaining what you found on your system would be enough. Just send them the link to Norton's tool, or AVG's web site, so that they can clean out their system. Hopefully, they had a good up to date antivirus program, so it shouldn't be a problem.

    Hope that helps!

MsBlast is a nasty one...look at symantec's site. They have the tools to rid. With XP, you have to disable the restore feature before you can clean it..

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear that all is well with the system! Even better that no one in your address book was effected.
