A Strange Question

    I just put a second hard drive in my AMD XP Athlon 2000 PC.I've had it in for a couple of days now and it's running fine.The strange question is......Every so often I hear a quiet sound coming from my computer case.The only way I can describe the sound is it's like a squeaky hinge on a door.It only lasts for a second at most and I hear it maybe once every 20 mins. or so.Does anyone have any idea what it could be?...It has only done it since I put in the new hard drive which is a Hitachi 80 GB 7200 drive.

    The squeaky hinge sound or the cat meow sound is a hallmark of the 7K250. They all had it until a recent firmware upgrade (as of june I think).

    Thanks for your reply..........I thought I was going nuts. :(

    It seems then that this noise is normal for this drive and it is not a fault??

    Am I right?

    Yup, it's normal and the time to start worrying is when it ceases to meow ...... ;) ...... !

    It is possible to update the firmware in "older" drives to the new "meow-less" version. The update is not officially published on Hitachi's home page but get in contact with them and You'll get it.

    The sound doesn't bother me personally and it is kind of reassuring to hear that it's still alive ...... :cool: ...... and I always wanted a cat without the need for a litter box!

    I have a cat and don't have a litter tray.....he goes out when he needs the loo. :D

    I installed the Firmware update and no squeal from the drive so far. :)
