I hope I can explain this properly.
I tried to install iTunes and it has to install Quicktime also.
It would not finish at the Quicktime part of the install and said there was a network error. I don't know what it meant because I don't have a network. I thought maybe the problem was because I already have Quicktime so I decided to uninstall it before trying again. BUT, it would not uninstall and I got the following error.

"A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\quicktime.msi" I clicked on OK and another popup said "fatal error'.

I am at a loss because I do not have the expertise needed to know what this means or what to do.
I restarted my computer but it did not help. When I see the words'fatal error' it really scares me!!!!!!!

I hope somebody can help me. Please bear in mind that I am old as dirt and twice as dumb! TIA

I seem to have been able to fix this myself by fiddling around...First I did a registry cleaner and then I went to the control panel and tried to uninstall Quicktime again and got the same error as before. I was curious so I clicked on 'change' instead of remove and there was an option to repair and an option to remove. First I repaired it and then I clicked remove and it was successfully removed. Then I tried to install iTunes with Quicktime included again and this time it was successfully installed. I surprised myself!!

The regisry cleaner did show an invalid key in the Windows installer and I repaired it...whether that had something to do with the final result, I have no idea.

I am posting this just in case anyone else has the same problem.

Congratulations! Trial and error is the name of the game. Don't you love it!

    A side note:

A friend bought a new printer, HP Photosmart but I don't remember the exact model. The bundled software need .NET Framework 1.1 which wasn't installed. The computer was connected to the internet while installing the bundled software and .NET Framework 1.1 was downloaded and installed automatically.

    Now, to the parallel:

When Windows Update offers SP1 for .NET Framework 1.1, it does not install and the reason is that it cannot find a specific network resource (from where HP downloaded .NET Framework 1.1?) which is similar to your "network error ". I don't know if uninstalling the bundled software and uninstalling .NET Framwork 1.1 to be able to get .NET Framework 1.1 from a proper source will cure the problem but I will try it the next time I visit my friend.

When there is a prerequisite for an installation, such as .NET Framework or QuickTime, I always install the prerequisite separately from a proper source. In addition to that, I always run installations disconnected from the internet. That way, I know that nothing is downloaded "behind my back ".
