Hi, I've just had my Windows XP clean-installed on my Thinkpad by a couple of computer guys and I have this one lingering problem I need some help with:

When I use quotes - apostrophes, inverted commas, especially with the letter e I get this:

    ë, or this: é

I thought I could solve it by tinkering with language and regional settings - but to no avail. The problem wasn't there before I had the computer fixed, so I suspect it is a driver or similar issue as it appears in every program I use.

The other problem is that the quotes usually don't appear at all - unless I hit them two or three times and then I get a row of them.

If someone could help me download the correct driver or add-on or something I would appreciate it. I did have a complete system back-up but that was advised against as it might contain the very bugs I had the reinstall done to fix.

So to be clear - I have not done anything strange, there is no virus or anything. The only problem appears to be that the computer guys have installed the wrong or an outdated driver, but I am too afraid to update it as I might lose the use of my computer keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's an IBM-branded Lenovo R52, Australian English with US keyboard layout - this being the default setting. There are a few odd drivers in there I don't recognise since the reinstall. As you can see the apostrophes work fine inside a contraction, but not otherwise.

I'm a former OSX user and all this manual driver updating really does my head in, so I'd appreciate a no-risk solution if possible. I don't want to get a different driver that might conflict with the one I've got now - or if I have to uninstall the existing and reinstall anew and proper one; I need to know I can still use the keyboard/Ultranav to do that in-between step.

    Solved:

You reassured me I was on the right track originally.

It took a few go's but the problem seemed to be that there were two conflicting keyboard layouts operating simultaneously. I ended up deleting them both and trying "English (Australian) with US layout" - exactly like that. After a few restarts it's held. Good to know it wasn't a driver issue.

There was an option for US International underneath it originally, which I deleted in one of my attempts and that's what seemed to solve the problem - perhaps coupled with flushing out the keyboard profile or something like that. But I couldn't delete it the first time I tried - before posting here. I first had to change the keyboard to something else (I chose UK English) and then restart, then delete the other two, then reinstate the Australian one, then delete the UK one and restart again.

I'm doing my own clones and clean installs from now on. This was only the last in a string of crazy problems.
